Closed Reduction Nasal Fracture Post Operative Information 1.) It is normal for you to experience a slow amount of nasal bleeding postoperatively. This should stop on its own within 24-48 hrs. 2.) After having your nasal bones reset you may also notice some bruising and swelling around your nose and eyes. Gentle application of ice packs for 15 minutes three times a day can help to reduce the swelling. Sleeping with the head elevated on a couple of pillows may also make you more comfortable at night for the first several days after surgery. 3.) It is important to not disturb the nasal cast placed on the outside of the nose. If the cast or underlying tape somehow becomes loose, do not attempt to replace it. 4.) Protect your nose from being bumped or manipulated in any manner; this can cause the bones to become redeviated. 5.) You may have splints in your nose for several days following surgery; this will make breathing through your nose difficult. It is OK to start spraying nasal saline in the nose after the bleeding stop to help prevent dryness and loosen up the clots in your nose. 6.) Avoid activities that make it more likely for your nose to bleed. This includes blowing your nose, vigorous exercise, heavy lifting and sneezing. If you sneeze, let the air pass through your mouth like a cough, and not your nose. If you bend over, keep your head above your heart. 7.) Call your doctor if you experience: -uncontrolled pain, bleeding or vomiting -fever greater than 101.5 degrees Fahrenheit Jeffrey J. Dyer, M.D. Christopher L. Lykins, M.D Samuel S.
