Post-operative Nasal/Sinus Instructions
You should expect minor bleeding following your nasal or sinus surgery.
Minor bleeding should consist of a trickle or so of fresh blood from your nose if
you should lean over or look down. You are provided with supplies to change
your nasal dressing as needed. Expect to change this dressing 5-10 times during
the first evening, 2-3 times the second day, and maybe 1-2 times by the third or
fourth days. This minor bleeding is tolerated in healthy patients. It is allowed in
order to avoid painful nasal packing. Every attempt will be made to avoid the
placement of nasal packs if possible; of course, your safety and comfort are of
foremost importance.
You may use Afrin Nasal Spray (available at your local store) as directed
to control any persistent or bothersome bleeding. If bleeding should become
significant or exceed that described above, please call the office for further
assistance.
You (sinus patients) should begin using the Saline Nasal Rinse Kit or
saltwater spray (Oceanspray Nasal Mist, available at your local store) on the first
day following surgery. This will reduce the amount of dried secretions and
crusting in your nose.
If you were started on a steroid nasal spray (Flonase, Nasonex, Nasocort,
etc.) prior to your surgery, please begin using it again on the third day following
surgery
PLEASE NOTE: You will not be able to breath well through your
nose until after your first weeks office visit following surgery.
If you had a Septoplasty alone or with sinus surgery, you may have surgical
splints or packing inside your nose to assist with healing. These splints prevent
adequate airflow and allow secretions to build up inside your nose. Your doctor
will remove these splints and clear your nose and sinuses of these secretions
during your first visit after surgery. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THESE
SPLINTS! Using the sinus rinse kit or oceanspray mist will help to moisten and
remove these secretions.
**Please feel free to call the office if you have any questions, problems, or
concerns following your surgery.
