Intervention Guideline:
Pediatric Respiratory Arrest
Indications:

Pediatric patients with cessation of effective breathing secondary to airway obstruction or
respiratory disease
These guidelines assume that all interventions are:
 Based on the relevant medical principles document
 Delivered in the context of the universal fundamental approach for all patients

Consider causes
 Airway obstruction
 Respiratory Disease
 Hypoxia
Ensure airway is clear
 Check for chest rise associated with air entry
If no chest rise and child
If no chest rise and child is
unconscious
conscious
Child < 1 year
 CPR
 5 back blows
 5 chest thrusts
Child > 1 year
 4 abdominal thrusts
Check for foreign body presentation
In the absence of chest rise repeat above steps
Consider advanced airway management
Monitor
Advanced airway management
+/- CPR
