SCHOOL PICTURES
School pictures will be taken on Thursday, September 10th. Information brochures were sent home last
Thursday. Orders must be turned in to the teacher. Everyone will get their picture taken.
OPEN HOUSE
Tallula Elementary will have an “Open House” on Thursday, September 10th, from 6:30-7:30 p.m.
Kindergarten, first, second, and third grade students and their families are invited to meet their child’s
teacher and see his/her classroom. Refreshments will be served by the Tallula Parents Assciation.
MILES OF SMILES
Parents are reminded that Illinois law requires all students in kindergarten, second, and sixth grades to
have a dental exam. To be in compliance for the 2009-10 school year, exams must be completed within
18 months prior to the May 15th deadline. Applications for the Miles of Smiles Program were available
during registration and were also sent home with students. Families that want their children to receive a
dental exam through the Miles of Smiles Program must return the application form by Friday, September 25th.
Parents who completed the form during registration do not need to fill out another form.
JR. POMS CLINIC SCHEDULED
Debi Love, coach of the high school Poms, and her squad are hosting a Jr. Poms Clinic for 3rd through
6th grade girls during the week of September 14th. Tallula 3rd grade girls will be transported to PORTA
Central Monday through Thursday on the “early bus”, leaving Tallula at 2:40 p.m. They will be met as they
exit the bus by the squad members. Practices will be Monday through Thursday after school and parents
are responsible for picking up their students at 5:00 p.m. SHARP. The girls will perform on Friday,
September 18th during halftime of the PORTA Varsity football game.
ATTENDANCE IS IMPORTANT
Research shows that attendance plays an important role in a student’s ability to reach his/her maximum
educational potential. Therefore, Tallula Elementary will again this year reward kindergarten through third
grade students for their good attendance record through our Perfect Attendance Program. Students with
perfect attendance during the month of September will receive a book bag tag as their reward. Each
month a different tag will be given to students who achieve perfect attendance during the month. This
program has been very popular with students in the past as they enjoy collecting the different tags
throughout the year.
While perfect attendance is the ultimate goal, we realize circumstances such as illness, family
emergencies, etc. occur. Whenever a child is absent, parents are required to contact the school by 8:20
a.m. For your convenience, messages may be left on the answering machine by calling 634-4328 prior to
7:30 a.m. When leaving a message, please leave the child’s name, the name of the person calling, and
the reason for the child’s absence. After a student’s fifth absence, parents will receive a letter from the
District Truancy Social Worker. Absences which are medically excused will not be counted toward the five
days if the parent/legal guardian immediately provides the school with a written doctor’s excuse or
appointment verification slip which lists the specific date(s) in question.
Parents are reminded that
state mandated instructional minutes vary by grade level. Requirements for students in kindergarten and
first grade are less than those established for students in grades 2 – 12 and that accounting software is
used to determine student attendance. Anyone with questions regarding their child’s attendance record
may contact the school office.
HELP PORTA SCHOOLS – ORDER MARKET DAY
PORTA PTA participates in a fundraising program called Market Day. Each month, an order form is sent
home and parents can order restaurant-quality food, the same food used by many restaurants. The best
part is that PTA earns a 10% profit from each purchase. The funds are provided to teachers to use
towards equipment or supplies for their classrooms. The Market Day order form may be returned to
school or you may order online at www.marketday.com. When you order online, don’t forget to check the
clearance section for extra bargains. Market Day orders are delivered to PORTA Central; pick-up time is
6:45 p.m. on the following Wednesdays: Sept. 23rd, Oct. 21st, Nov. 18th, Dec. 16th, Jan. 27th, Feb. 24th,
Mar. 24th, April 28th, and May 26th. Parents are also asked to participate by volunteering at the monthly
sales. Sixth grade parents are asked to assist in September. If you have any questions, contact Judy
Foster, Market Day Chairperson, at 632-5321.
PRESIDENTIAL ADDRESS
PORTA Schools will not be participating in the Presidential Address on Sept. 8th. If as a parent, you feel
strongly your child should view the presidential address, we suggest recording the address at home and
watching it together as a family.
CHANGE IN YOUR CHILD’S REGULAR ROUTINE
Please remember that if your child has a change in his/her routine after school, (being picked up by
someone else, going home with someone else, etc.), YOU MUST SEND A NOTE to school informing us
of the change. If we are not notified, your child will do his/her regular routine. Students are not
allowed to ride another bus to play after school or attend birthday parties, etc. Your cooperation on this
matter will be greatly appreciated.
