Math 1199AMP - Accelerated Mathematics Placement Enrollment information for Spring 2016: • Section: 1 • CRN: 24995 • Day/Time: TR, 1:00 – 2:15 • Location: PS 306 • Credits: 3 • Instructor: Randa Kress • Enrollment: Requires instructor Approval • • • • • • • Section: CRN: Day/Time: PS 307 Credits: Instructor: Enrollment: 2 (reserved for English Language Learners) 24996 MWF, 12:00 – 12:50 3 Linda Engle Requires Instructor Approval Description: This course will familiarize students with the use of the English language as it applies to mathematics. Students will work at their own pace, using ALEKS computer software, to master topics taught in Math 0025 (Introductory Algebra), 1108 (Intermediate Algebra), 1143 (College Algebra) and 1144 (Trigonometry). Mastery: Mastery is sequential meaning that the student must learn the course material in the correct order: Math 0015 →Math 0025→Math 1108→Math 1143→Math 1144. Ultimately, attaining mastery is equivalent to taking the course, e.g., if a student finishes Math 1199AMP with Math 1143 mastery, then the student meets the prerequisite for any class having Math 1143 (or a lower level math class) as a prerequisite. Placement Assessment After completing ALEKS modules at a particular level, e.g., Math 0025, a student is eligible to take a mastery level exit exam for the given level. In particular, a student is not allowed to take an exit exam without first completing the ALEKS modules. The attached syllabus further explains the exit exam procedure. Achieving mastery level on an exit exam means passing at a 90% or better. Workload Math 1199-AMP will require 10 hours per week of work online, including 3 hours in-class and 7 hours outside of class. Recording of Math Placement Midterm Placement: At the 8-week mark a student’s transcript will show a Placement Assessment that indicates what mathematics level they have mastered. For example, if a student has mastered the topics covered through Math 1108, this placement will be recorded so the student may subsequently register for any course that has Math 1108 as a prerequisite. Final Placement: At the end of the course, a student’s transcript will show a second Placement Assessment indicating their mathematics mastery level. For example, if Math 1143 mastery has been attained, then the final placement will recognize that the student has met the prerequisite for any course having a prerequisite of 1143 or lower. Repeatability Math 1199AMP may be taken up to three times for credit. Grading: The grading for Math 1199AMP is Satisfactory/Unsatisfactory with the transcript indicating the Placement Assessment. Attendance is mandatory. Non-attendance or failure to complete the course will result in an ‘X’ grade. Eligibility requirements: Students who test in to courses below Math 1170 (Calculus I) Students for whom English is a second language TOEFL score of 35 – 93 (iBT) or IELTS score of 5 – 6.5 (overall). Course Requires Instructor Approval; send emails to kresrand@isu.edu if they satisfy the above requirements.
