Rebecca Hamm Biography Rebecca Hamm I graduated from The University of Liverpool in 1993 and my first clinical attachment during my training had been in Urology. It was at this early stage that my love of Urology began and I was delighted to be appointed a consultant in 2007 to the department in which I had first studied. I trained in Urology in the South West and completed an MD in >>>>>. My post as Diagnostic Urologist was the first of its type in the country. I am based at the Urology Centre at Broadgreen Hospital. The philosophy of the unit is to provide ‘One Stop Clinics’ whenever possible for our patients, so patients are seen, investigated and given a diagnosis and treatment plan all on the same day. They can then be discharged back to their GP or referred on to another team member for their ongoing care. This keeps my follow up rate low with a new to follow up rate of 1:1.2 compared to 1:2.2 for Urology as a whole. The unit has become a model for other units throughout the country. In 2010 I was invited to give a key note speech at the annual meeting of the British Association of Urological Surgeons outlining my service. Consultants from across the country have come to visit to see this landmark service. I undertake outpatient assessment and investigation of all urological patients. I run the haematuria and prostate biopsy service for the unit. I undertake flexible cystoscopy including biopsy, cystodiathermy and removal of ureteric stents as well as male and female urethral dilatation. I undertake transrectal prostate biopsies and extended core biopsies. Having studied with Dr John Dean during my training in Plymouth I now lead the sexual function service for the unit. I have a specialist interest in patients who have received radical treatment for pelvic cancers; in particular prostate and bowel. Over the last 5 years I have mentored 2 nurses through the Nurse Education in Erectile Dysfunction Course who now work along side me in clinic. During my training and since taking up my consultant post I have been very involved with Ultrasound training both on a personal and academic level. I completed a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound in July 2011 at the University of LiverpooI with modules in ultrasound physics, and testis and prostate scanning. I provide education on the masters in Medical ultrasound course for Liverpool University and have consulted on Department of Health Guidelines on Urological ultrasound. In my final year of training I organised and ran the first residential course in Urological Ultrasound at the Peninsula Radiology Academy in Plymouth. In 2011 I ran the BAUS ultrasound course at the Urology Centre at Broadgreen. Both of these events had excellent feedback. My long-term aim is to continue to work with Liverpool University to provide University and CASE accredited short modules in Ultrasound for Urologists. I am currently co-authoring a book on Urological Ultrasound. I am committed to medical education. As a trainee, I undertook a postgraduate certificate in medical education. I am an honorary clinical teacher at the University of Liverpool and teach regularly on the Masters in Medical Diagnostic Ultrasound Course. I am a trainer on the Royal College of Surgeons Training the Trainers Course. I am currently working with a consultant colleague to bring simulation training in Urology to the North West and we have just run the first simulation training day for Urology trainees and ward nurses. I hope to lead this new area of training in the first centre to be established outside London. In keeping with my commitment to education and in response to the Trusts wish to provide mentorship I am training as a mentor and am currently mentoring 3 other consultants. I am also training as an appraiser for revalidation.
