Junior Service Learning Project
All AAST Juniors are required to do a minimum of 20 hours of service in the community through non-profit
organizations. This service is an opportunity for students to learn as they make worthwhile contributions to the
community and to practice and demonstrate employability/lifeskills competencies. It is a way in which students
demonstrate what they know and are able to do outside the classroom and the school as they help others.
The components of the Junior Service Learning Project are listed below.
1. JSL Time Log—This log is a record of the time you spend at the site. Be sure to verify your hours by getting a
signature from a supervising adult at the time of each visit. During each visit you need to fill in an entry in
your JSL Time Log which includes what you did, your reflections about what you did, what you learned, and
what you felt about your day’s activities. These notes will help you when you complete your service hours
and write the reflective essay described below. (25 points)
2
Reflective Essay— When all of your hours are completed, write a reflection of your service learning activities.
Review the notes you took as you completed your service hours. Discuss what you learned from your
service, how it benefited you, and how it benefited others. Discuss in detail by giving specific examples of
what you did, including anything that you did that relates to your major or to another curricular area.
Also, choose 3 of our employability/lifeskills and explain how you used them while doing your service
learning project. (3-5 pages, word-processed TNR 12) (50 points)
3. Oral Presentation—In a 3-5 minute oral presentation, explain your service learning. Share information and
facts that you found out at the site or experiences you had. Tell how your service benefited you and
benefited others and what you would like your classmates and teachers to learn from your experiences.
Explain 3 employability/lifeskills that you used while doing your service. Create a PowerPoint presentation
(with 8-12 slides)which organizes and presents your main points. (25points)
