What have been the social and economic
impacts of the enlargement of the
European Union (EU)?
Enlargement of the European Union
• The EU is an example of a trade bloc.
• Every country within the bloc has agreed to trade freely
with the other members and also allow free movement of
people between their countries.
• In 2004, the EU was enlarged to
include countries from central
Europe such as Poland.
• Unemployment in some of the
member states, e.g. Poland,
was high.
• Some people warned that a flood of migrants would move
the UK, Spain, Germany and Italy to find work.
• If they did, would it be a good or bad thing for the UK and
other wealthier members of the EU?
• Discuss with the person

1) Read through the A3 sheet carefully.
2) Using figure 19
a. Compare the rise in mobile phone ownership in India and
China.
b. Compare mobile phone ownership in India and Japan.
c. The population in China is only slightly larger than India. Japan
has a population of only 127 million. Predict how the mobile
phone market might change in the future in these 3 countries.
3) Answer the following question: Explain how
globalisation has benefited the people who live
in India (6 marks)
