Elementary Outstanding Educators

WINNER! Ethel Reimer, 2 nd Grade, Meade, KS

The true measure of an outstanding teacher is the way they demonstrate their craft in the classroom. Mrs. Reimer continually develops individual learning strategies to meet the needs of every child. Her sensitivity and love for all children is exemplified in her teaching. The learning environment in Mrs. Reimer’s classroom is a wonderful experience to observe. With a firm, but gentle way she manages students in a manner that always preserves the dignity of the child.

Jamie Anderson, 5 th Grade, Garden City, KS

Positive with students and staff, always has the students’ best interest at heart, works right along with her students to promote life long reading, individualizes instruction for our diverse population, takes time to reflect on her teaching practices and utilizes community resources for her students’ benefit.

Ruth Bartlett, 2 nd Grade, Fowler, KS

Ruth Bartlett is recognized as an outstanding educator simply due to her commitment and care for her students. Academics are not the only learning taking place in her classroom; life skills such as respect and responsibility are taught and learned as well. She loves children and learning and it shows from the jungle and ocean atmosphere of her classroom to the ever-changing bulletin boards (student work) in the hallway to the hugs and high fives delivered on a daily basis to students and staff.

Monica Diaz, Kindergarten/Kinderprep Teacher, Garden City, KS

As students enter Monica’s classroom, she takes them from wherever they are to the highest level of achievement they can attain. Monica is a role model and an excellent teacher as well as an excellent minority bilingual teacher. She considers her students’ need before her own. She is willing to use the coaching of other teachers to guide her to new practices. She keeps herself up on researched strategies for best teaching practices.

She should be recognized for her gift to many students, herself, her knowledge and her love.

Barbara Dunn, 3 rd Grade, Plains, KS

Barbara Dunn has been a mentor for all teachers at Plains Elementary School.

Mrs. Dunn is very positive and innovative in her teaching methods. She is the ultimate

“team player”. She goes about her job everyday with pride, passion and enthusiasm. On several occasions she has taken a reader who has not been on grade level and helped them obtain their appropriate level by the end of the year. This takes hard work on her part and she spends extra time with students. She sets an excellent example for her fellow teachers.

Jeanne Hamilton, 3 rd /4 th Grade Loop, Garden City, KS

Mrs. Hamilton is one of the rare breed of teachers that has been able to maintain her enthusiasm and drive over the course of a long career. With over 20 years of experience she maintains a tremendously positive attitude, a high degree of enthusiasm, and a strong sense of commitment to kids. She starts every day by having her students recite a commitment to do better, to do the best they are capable of, and to work toward a future of some type of post secondary schooling. Mrs. Hamilton maintains an infectious sense of purpose that offers an opportunity for the rest of the staff to see even the most difficult situations in a positive light.

Stephanie Hammond, Kindergarten, Garden City, KS

Mrs. Hammond was willing to “jump right in” and learn how to use the new reading series adopted by the school district so that her kindergarten students had the best learning experience possible. Mrs. Hammond is a positive role model for her kindergarten students as well as the Florence Wilson staff. She goes about her daily activities with a smile on her face and a hearty laugh not far behind! She gets along well with students, staff and parents. She is a team player who is willing to do whatever is needed to provide a positive experience for kids in our school.

Terry Hartzler, 1 st Grade, Spearville, KS

Mrs. Hartzler is the type of teacher who sets her work in the classroom as her number one goal each day. She is very determined to help each of her students excel.

Her drive for excellence is evidenced by the energy she exerts while expanding her instructional abilities and knowledge. Terry doesn’t teach the same way she did five years ago. She is constantly updating the programs and instructional methods that she uses in the classroom. Terry sets a very high mark for the students to attain. As the students strive to attain this mark, they develop many skills that will help them be successful now and in the future.

Vicki Haydock, Elementary School (no grade specified), Ashland, KS

Mrs. Haydock is a positive advocate for education. She is constantly striving to improve her classroom and school. She serves on various committees and volunteers her time and energy on extracurricular enrichment activities. She is such a positive, friendly, nurturing teacher that children actually look forward to after-school tutoring and summer school. She does not allow students to fail. She reteaches and reinforces on an individual basis and sticks with it until a student masters the concept being taught. She used multiple modalities with lots of hands-on activities and cross-curricular exercises. Mrs.

Haydock also exhibits a positive attitude, even when dealing with difficult situations.

Her kindness has earned her the respect of her students and her peers. She sets the bar high directly for her students and indirectly for her fellow teachers.

Phyllis Howard, 1 st Grade, Syracuse, KS

As a veteran teacher with over 35 years in the classroom, Ms. Howard continues to be committed to classroom excellence, even though she could have already retired.

She is here by 6:30 every morning, stays late, and is up at the school on weekends.

Colleagues look at her as a role model and a resource when they need help because she is a rock. In other words, she is solid with everything from classroom management to lesson planning.

Sherry Jarmer, 2 nd Grade, Garden City, KS

Mrs. Jarmer is a veteran teacher, but has never allowed her instruction to become stagnant. She continues to evolve using researched ideas and theories to teach. She is diligent in her efforts to pursue methods to better meet the needs of all learners using the

Internet, professional material and her own creativity for inspiration. She is flexible and unafraid to implement new strategies to improve the quality of instruction for her students. Mrs. Jarmer’s classroom has the appearance of a learning laboratory. Activities and projects are utilized to address the multiple of levels and learning styles that are prevalent in a typical classroom. Her character is sterling and her loyalty unquestioned.

She is the definition of a quality teacher and because of her expertise and professionalism, is one that is virtually irreplaceable. Our profession and students are better because of Mrs. Jarmer’s time, effort and energy.

Elizabeth Krasovec, Literacy Coach, Garden City, KS

Mrs. Krasovec is an educator that has crossover from classroom teacher to teacher of teachers. The role that she currently serves in is the trend of the future and she is assisting teachers to help our students to not be left behind in their educational endeavor.

She leads our teachers to read current research, view current educational trends, and provide feedback on observations, student assessment results and follow-up discussions and collaboration with teacher to teacher and by grade level.

Kay Linville, 1 st Grade/Literacy Coach, Garden City, KS

Mrs. Linville has been dedicated to the profession for many years and continues to not only add teaching tools to her repertoire, but acts as a mentor to other teachers and maintains a positive attitude with her students. She is always concerned about who she could do better and never teaches the same thing year after year. She is a great role model for both students and staff. Kay’s dedication spills over into many aspects of her daily life. She volunteers her musical talent at the hospital, does many things for her church and missionary work throughout the world. Most of her missionary work is dedicated to helping children in 3 rd

world countries.

Mary Lupton, 5 th Grade, Montezuma, KS

Mrs. Lupton was willing to change the instructional methods used to meet the needs of her students. She was not threatened by change but welcomed the opportunity to adjust to meet the students’ specific needs. Mrs. Lupton exemplifies all of the qualities one would want to see in an educator. She is a caring individual both in and out of the classroom. She always has a smile for her students and colleagues. Even in retirement,

Mary’s impact is still present by her continued involvement with the students at

Montezuma Elementary.

Lisa Lyons, 3 rd Grade, Copeland, KS

Lisa Lyons does a great job in the classroom, bus she also cares about her students and it shows. All of her classroom kids know that she truly cares about them. She takes the time to really get to know them and see beyond the outside shell of the kid. Lisa

Lyons shows excellence in improving student performance by developing lesson plans that fit all students in her classroom. Her lesson plans include activities that will serve all of the Multiple Intelligences, which improves student performance.

Connie Myers, 1 st Grade, Sublette, KS

Mrs. Myers has been in education for over 30 years. During that time she has developed well established as well as progressive teaching methods. As a classroom teacher, Connie has devoted her efforts to develop inquiring and enthusiastic learners.

She teaches to each child as an individual and through her classroom leadership the children that she works with are able to perform with competence at the 2 nd

grade level and beyond. She is a natural role model to those just getting into the teaching profession.

Her work habits and professionalism is top notch!

Roger Reed, 6 th Math, Science & Reading, Garden City, KS

Mr. Reed is a non-traditional teacher who remains calm no matter the situation.

He quietly mentors teachers both new and experienced. He volunteers for committees with the building. He keeps up on the best practices and shares them with his colleagues.

He volunteers to help wherever we need him including being the crossing guard. He is the teacher who shows up when you need an extra hand without having to ask him. He puts his students first and starts each day by greeting them with a handshake. Teachers and students look up to Mr. Reed as an example of who and what they should be.

Julie Roth, 3 rd Grade, Deerfield

Julie is an extremely positive teacher. She looks at every situation with optimism and her view of situations becomes contagious with other staff members. Julie’s students also maintain positive, optimistic attitudes. She works hard to make sure that they develop academic skills, social skills and develop good character skills. She has the desire to continue to evaluate her own teaching and to search for methods and strategies to continually improve her skills. Julie does everything she can to become an expert on everyone of our school improvement strategies. The staff considers her to be an expert educator and easily go to her when they are looking for answers to help them improve their own teaching strategies. Julie is always positive with her students, parents and other staff members.

Eva Siebert, 5 th /6 th Language Arts; 7 th Social Studies, Wallace County (Sharon

Springs, KS)

Mrs. Siebert is an authority in her content knowledge. Although that is important for improving student performance, her undeniable expertise is the excellent role modeling she provides for her students. Mrs. Siebert transcends the qualities of friendliness, openness, and the appropriate use of humor into her classroom on a daily basis. Mrs. Siebert models her expectations for her students, and treats each student with dignity and respect.

Glen Sonderegger, 2 nd Grade, Garden City, KS

The most positive impact Glen has on the teaching profession is simply the example he sets! He has expectations of himself as a professional and he treats everyone with respect. Mr. Sonderegger is always working with ALL kids. His passion for his career is evident every minute of everyday. He is positive and upbeat with the students.

He builds a rapport with each and every child he interacts with him. The students love and respect him and it is evident all the time! Mr. Sonderegger has taught for 38 years
