Dave Ebersole, Principal

We are off and running here at Coupeville Elementary School as the start of the 2014 - 2015 school year has begun. It is always an exciting time when school begins. Here are a few things to remember as your child gets back into or starts the routine of school. Consistent bedtimes and wake up times go along way for assuring that your child is rested and prepared for their week at school. Coming to school every day and arriving on time significantly increases your child’s success in academic achievement. Please make sure your child is here before the first bell rings at 8:55. If for some reason your child will not be in school please call Joyce Roethle at 678-2474 or email jroethle@coupeville.k12.wa.us

to let us know the reason for the absence.

Attendance is essential. When children miss school they fall behind and it is difficult for teachers to catch children up on lessons missed. Thank you for your help.

Parking lot safety is important to us. We will periodically review the process at our community type events such as Open House, Conferences and PTA events. If you have questions or just want to provide us feedback we welcome your conversation.

Attendance, A Key to

Your Student’s Success

Research shows that children who are in school most of the time do better on standardized tests.

Being late for school hurts a child’s learning, too.

A student who is 10 minutes late every day will miss 30 hours of instruction during the year.

Children can copy notes or make up an assignment, but they can never get back what’s most important: the discussions, the questions, the explanations by the teacher and the thinking that makes learning come alive.

Your child’s success in school depends on having a solid educational background, one that can only be gained through regular school attendance.

Here’s how you can improve your child’s school attendance.

 Talk with your child about why it’s important to attend school regularly.

 Avoid scheduling family trips or doctor appointments during school hours.

 Make sure your child stays healthy by eating nutritious food and getting enough sleep and exercise.

 Don’t accept excuses for why your child

“must” miss or be late for school.

 Discuss with your child what happened at school each day.

 Support school rules and consequences for skipping class and being tardy.

 Show your child why education is important. Give specific examples of how education helps people succeed.

 Lead by example. If children see parents taking days off of work for no real reason they may expect to do the same thing.

Administration of Medication at School

The school must have prior authorization to administer any kind of medication to your child at school. You can pick up the authorization to administer medication at school for your child and have it signed by your doctor and yourself.

School staff cannot administer any type of over the counter medication without a signed form.

If your child requires medication at school and we don't have a copy of his authorization form, you are welcome to come and give your child the medication.

If you have questions please contact Tina Lewis,

School Nurse, at 678-2421.

Title I

Coupeville Elementary has adopted what is known as a “school wide model” for delivering services. The school wide model was adopted to provide maximum flexibility to staff for serving students in need. Focused assessment throughout the school year provides an ongoing record of student progress, which enables our teachers to tailor instruction to meet the specific needs of each child.

The goal of Title 1 is to provide instructional services and activities, which support students in meeting the state’s challenging performance standards.

Coupeville School District Title 1

Family Involvement Policy

Federal Law requires that we publish the notification for accessing the Coupeville

School District Family Involvement Policy

(4130) each year. We are doing so with this newsletter brief. A copy of the

Coupeville Elementary School Title 1

Family Involvement Policy and Procedure is available in the school office and is sent home with students who receive

Title 1 Services during the 2014 – 2015 school year. Please feel free to request a copy.

Advising Parents of the Right to Know

Information about a Teacher’s

Qualifications as Required by NCLB

At Coupeville Elementary we are pleased to say that all of our teachers and paraprofessionals have met state qualifications and certification requirements that meet the highly qualified status as defined in the No

Child Left Behind Act.

As an elementary school that provides

Title I services, we must meet federal rules related to teacher qualifications as defined in No Child Left Behind. These rules allow you to learn more about your child’s teachers’ training and credentials.

We are happy to provide this information to you. At any time, you may ask:

 Whether the teacher met state qualifications and certification requirements for the grade level and subject he/she is teaching,

 Whether the teacher received an emergency or conditional certificate through which state qualifications were waived, and

 What undergraduate or graduate degrees the teacher holds, including graduate certificates and additional degrees, and major(s) or area(s) of concentration.

You may also ask whether your child receives help from a paraprofessional. If your child receives this assistance, we can provide you with information about the paraprofessional’s qualifications.

Our staff is committed to helping your child develop the academic knowledge and critical thinking he/she needs to succeed in school and beyond. That commitment includes making sure that all of our teachers and paraprofessionals are highly skilled.

If you have any questions in regard to our staff’s qualifications please feel free to contact the school at 678-2470.

Playground Map

We have a newly painted map on the playground!

This summer, Barbara and Tom Fournier, along with their great granddaughter, Kayla Cooks, repainted the map of the United States on our playground. It was a multi-step process taking many hours and the results are terrific! Home

Depot donated some of the paint and the

Fourniers donated the rest, as well as their

-Page 3 – time. Kayla is a third grade student this year.

Be sure to check out the map when you are on our playground.

School Counselor News

There will be lots of great things going on at

Coupeville Elementary School this year! The school counselor will be going in to every classroom through out the year doing 2 nd Step – an antiviolence, anti-bullying curriculum. Ask your children about the activities we do to learn about listening, apologizing, making amends and dealing with anger (to name just a few of the topics).

The Big Brother Big Sister Program will continue with matches made last year ongoing and new matches to be made this year. Please contact

Dana Stone at the elementary school (678-

2475) if you are interested in getting a Big

Brother or Big Sister (high school students) for your son or daughter. The “Bigs” can help with homework, tutoring and social skills one day a week (during the school day).

The word of the month for September is

RESPECT – to honor and show positive regard and consideration for any individual or group of individuals. Your child will learn respectful behavior by watching the way you treat others.

When she makes a mistake, for instance, gently tell her what she’s done wrong, out of earshot of others. Also, let her see you respect ideas and beliefs that are different from your own. For example, point out that you are happy a friend is voting in an election even though you each favor a different candidate.

When you see your child acting respectfully, let him know that you’ve noticed. (“I like the way you asked your brother before borrowing that game.”) Your words and attention will encourage him to show respect in the future.

Tip: If you see disrespectful behavior on TV (a child rolling his eyes or talking back to a parent), tell your child that isn’t okay in real life. Then, ask him to be on the lookout for respectful actions by characters. How many can he spot before the program ends?

The Word of the month for October is

HONESTY – telling the truth. Talk with your child about times when it has been hard to tell the truth. This is also a topic that will be covered during 2 nd Step presentations in each classroom throughout the year.

The nurse’s office can always use clean changes of clothing in various sizes for boys and girls.

Please consider donating some of your child’s clothes that he/she is no longer wearing.
