DAYTON ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
285 Old Dayton Valley Road
Dayton, NV 89403
Dear Parents:
WELCOME!
The 2015-2016 school year promises to be a great experience and we’re glad that you will be a part of it!
The following information will help you and your child get off to a successful start:
Parents are the most important element in the success of a child’s education. Parents have a significant influence on their children’s
habits and attitudes about learning and school. It is critical that a strong positive relationship develops between you, your child’s
teacher, and the principal. You are an important part of the team when it comes to the educational decisions that affect your child. This
is a most important time in your child’s life. During the elementary school years, your child will develop knowledge, skills, and attitudes
that will determine his or her future success. The elementary school years pass too quickly! Let’s make the most of this time by
working together for your son or daughter.
Bobcat Booster Club: One of the ways you can support your child and the school is by being involved in the Bobcat Booster Club.
The Boosters are parents and faculty working together on projects to strengthen the educational program at Dayton Elementary School.
We invite you to get involved! Besides being worthwhile, it’s great to associate with parents and staff who take pride in the school!
Please see us if you want information about joining the Bobcat Booster Club.
Bus transportation: The majority of our students are transported to and from school every day by bus. Because bus transportation is
such an important part of our school operation, we ask your cooperation with the following basic bus rules:
1.
2.
3.
Safety is our highest concern. Students are expected to observe all safety rules. Violations will result in
temporary or permanent loss of bus privileges.
Students are expected to demonstrate good behavior on the bus. For their own safety, students must remain in
their seats except when loading or unloading. Food, drink, radios, or other items that create a distraction or
safety problem are not allowed on the bus.
Students should arrive at the bus stop about five minutes before the scheduled time.
Approximately 1300 students are transported by school bus each day in the Dayton area alone. This means that we need parents’ help
to make bus transportation run smoothly. If you want your child to ride a different bus, walk instead of ride, or do anything other than
what your child normally does, we need a written note in advance. We will not make any exceptions to this rule.
Occasionally, road or weather conditions slow our buses down. Please be patient with us during these times and know that we will do
the best we can to respond to your child’s transportation needs.
Picking up and dropping off students: Please do not drop off students in the morning before 8:40 a.m. We have no teachers on
duty before this time and cannot take responsibility for your child. If you are picking up your child from school, please make sure that
you arrive promptly. It is upsetting to students and difficult for staff when children are left at school beyond the school day. Your
cooperation is appreciated.
Messages: Only emergency messages of a serious nature will be delivered to students during class time. Learning time is very
important to us. Each disruption reduces our effectiveness. Try to plan ahead to avoid calls to your child at school, but if you must call
please call no later than 3:00 with your message.
Dress and grooming standards: We are largely tolerant of clothing choices and styles. However, there are some minimum
standards, by school district policy, which students must meet:
1.
2.
3.
4.
Dress or grooming must not disrupt the learning process or create a health or safety concern in any way.
Dress or grooming will not be allowed which is offensive or threatening to others; promotes drugs, alcohol, or
tobacco; or promotes unlawful activity.
Good hygiene is required. Clothing must be clean and in good repair.
Clothes must completely cover the torso. Hats are not allowed anywhere in the school building.
Please help us with these dress and grooming standards. We have far more important things to be concerned about and would prefer
that this not be a distraction.
Visitors: We welcome visitors and want parents, family members, and others in the community to feel comfortable at our school. For
obvious safety reasons we want to know who is on our campus, so we require that visitors check in with the office first and pick up an
identification badge. Please be prepared to show some type of personal identification, i.e. driver license, when picking up a student.
Change of address or telephone: It is essential that we have current information about your address and telephone. If you move or
your phone number changes, please let us know immediately so that we can update our records.
Emergency contacts: We appreciate that you are a busy parent. At times we may not be able to reach you when needed. We ask
that you give us the names of a few reliable individuals we can contact, if necessary, in case you are unavailable. (We will not, under
any circumstance, release your child to anyone who is not on your emergency list or who does not have your permission to
take your child from school.) We feel that we cannot be too careful with your child.
School Emergencies: In the event of a school emergency or school closure, we will make every attempt to reach parents by
telephone, through local radio stations, or by other means. Our first and only concern in these circumstances is our students’ well
being. We know that a decision to close school affects many people, including parents and students. We won’t make this decision
lightly. Only when we feel that the safety or well being of students is challenged will school be closed. At times, school might be the
safest place for students in such emergencies. Be assured that we will do everything we can to care for your child in the best way
possible.
General expectations for students: All students are expected to observe the following general rules of conduct:
1.
2.
3.
Respect other students’ rights to feel safe at school. Show respect for other people and their property.
Obey the rules of the classroom, playground, and hallways of the school.
Follow directions from responsible adults, be courteous, use appropriate language, show respect for the school,
be polite, and use good manners.
Attendance: Your child’s attendance at school is essential. It is impossible to make up everything missed when he or she is absent.
We sincerely hope that you will encourage you child to attend every day. If your child is ill or prevented from attending for any reason,
please let us know as soon as possible. Pre-arranged absences must be approved prior to the student’s absence. These forms are
available in the office. We want to know why our students are not in school and how we can help them return as quickly as possible.
School district policy requires students to be in attendance at least 90 percent of the days they are enrolled. Students who are absent
in excess of 18 days will be considered for retention.
Parent Conferences: We sincerely appreciate your interest in your child’s education. We have a fall and spring scheduled parent
conference. We strongly encourage your attendance at these two events. Should you need to talk with the principal or your child’s
teacher at other times, please call to make an appointment. We’d be happy to talk with you by phone or schedule a conference.
