LETS MAKE 2015-2016 EPIC Thank you to staff, students, parents and community members for an amazing start-up to this School Year. Transitioning can be challenging and adjusting to a new school or new school year can elicit feelings of confusion and uncertainty but our students are doing an excellent job learning the routines, finding their classes and following expectations necessary for future school success. We encourage all students to get involved in extra-curricular activities this school year. Edenwood staff offer a variety of supplementary activities in sports, music, the arts and leadership. Students should listen for announcements throughout the year to ensure they have all the information necessary to partake in these enriching opportunities. If purchased, please read and follow your child's Agenda daily. Through ongoing communication we can be proactive to ensure a successful year for all. If you have any questions, please call the appropriate staff member and they will be happy to assist you. As we at EMS look forward to success this year, please remember – "We can not always build the future for our youth, but we can build our youth for the future". Let us continue to work productively together. During this year’s opening day assembly students were introduced to the word EPIC. The now popular word EPIC is used to describe something that is “Extremely Awesome”. Students discovered that the term is also used to describe great achievements and/or spectacular and majestic events. During the assembly Edenwood’s choir performed an EPIC version of Connor Ross’ song “We are One”. We concluded our assembly by asking students to reflect on the following 3 things. 1. What have been some EPIC moments in your life? 2. How is Edenwood already EPIC? 3. What can we all do to make this the most EPIC school year ever? We are looking forward to sharing some Epical moments with our community throughout the year. Reorganization Day: Tuesday, September 29 No School for Students During the first weeks of school the School Board collects enrolment numbers. In the event we need to reorganize, communication will be sent home. The School Board informs the principals as to how the school is organized, and the number of students to be in each classroom to be compliant with the Ministry. At that point, if required, we would be redoing the timetable and balancing our classroom numbers. This is a difficult task and we appreciate your understanding and support. BREAKFAST CLUB BEGINS IN OCTOBER – details to follow Healthy Eating – Healthy Minds and Bodies! Edenwood students are encouraged to bring healthy items from home to eat, both at lunch time and as a snack. Nutritious, easy-to-carry food items are recommended for a quick energy boost mid-morning or mid-afternoon. We are asking that our students make healthy choices by avoiding sugar or chocolate, pop or other sugared drinks and snacks that are high in fat content but low in nutritional value. As well, all students are encouraged to carry a water bottle with them at all times, with water only. NUT and CHOCOLATE ALLERGIES Due to the fact that we have several students and staff at Edenwood Middle School with severe or life-threatening allergies, we ask that you support our efforts to keep these individuals safe by doing the following: Please read the label of any food you plan to send to school with your child. Since peanut and other nut products are the leading cause of food-induced anaphylaxis, we ask that you please avoid preparing school lunches that contain chocolate, nuts or peanuts. Creating a Safe and Respectful Environment for Diverse and Excellent Teaching and Learning. Values: Teamwork, Perseverance, Growth Stress that allergies can be lifethreatening. Discuss the importance of NOT sharing food with others and of washing their hands before and after eating. Working together we can ensure the safety of all students and staff.
