Level 1 Trauma Team Responsibilities
TRAUMA SURGERY ATTENDING
* Advise and assist the Surgical Trauma Team
Leader
* Provides faculty supervision
SURGICAL TRAUMA TEAM LEADER PGY 45
* Directs & supervises all team members
* Directs management of patient
* Determines need for CT, Arteriography & other
required tests
* Maintains crowd control. Takes direction from
Trauma Surgery Attending and/or ED Attending
MID-LEVEL TRAUMA PHYSICIAN PGY 2-3
* Performs initial evaluation, "Primary &
Secondary" assessment
* Places chest tube, central line, or performs
other procedures prior to completion of primary &
secondary survey
* Places NG/OG tube
* Assists Primary Trauma Physician
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT ATTENDING
* Advise and assist the Surgical Trauma Team
Leader
* Provides faculty supervision until arrival of
Trauma Surgery Attending
* Responsible for direction of airway
management
EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT RESIDENT PGY
2-3 (Airway)
* Establishes & maintains airway
* Evaluates & provides treatment
* Orders all IV fluids, blood & rates for each site
* Orders medications
* Performs initial evaluation, "Primary &
Secondary" assessment
* Verbalizes assessment to Surgical Trauma
Team Leader and Recording RN
* Takes direction from the Surgical Trauma
Team Leader
* May perform procedures, (chest tube insertion,
central line insertion, or other procedures) after
performing primary & secondary survey
* Orders any additional labs
PRIMARY TRAUMA RN
* Initiates CPR as needed
* Evaluate/report patient response to Trauma
Surgery Team Leader and recording RN
* Provides other nursing interventions
* Assist with crowd control
* Reports to Surgical Trauma Team Leader
RECORDING RN
* Documents all procedures, case notes,
treatments, patient response, etc. of patient
management
* Activates Video Equipment
* Reports to Surgical Trauma Team Leader
* Ensures all documentation (flow sheet, sign-in,
etc) is labeled and accompanies patient
EMERGENY DEPARTMENT LVN/TECH
(CIRCULATOR)
* Removes patient's clothes.
* Places foley at the request of the Primary RN or
ETS Team leader.
* Places monitor equipment on patient (BP,
pulse ox, cardiac, etc.)
* Establish IV and draws labs
RESPIRATORY THERAPIST
* Airway support and suction
* Placement of ET CO2 monitor
* Assist Airway Physician
RADIOLOGY TECHNICIAN
* Reports to room within 5 minutes
* Takes x-rays and returns x-rays to room within
5 minutes
CHAPLAIN
* Assists with patient identification
* Assists with notification of family
* Function as family advocate
PICU STAFF PHYSICIAN
* Provides consult assistance for IV fluid rates,
ventilatory settings, and medications at
the request of the Trauma Surg. Team Leader.
