(Schedule attached or forthcoming.) The Trade-Off….. 1. Twice a week Core Teachers will pull students from and during their lunch for “Lunch and Learn.” Teachers will pick up 4-7 pre-determined students that need additional tutoring/academic support for 30 minutes of their lunch. Math and Social Studies will pull on Tuesday and Thursday. English and Science will pull on Monday and Wednesday. The Process….. 1. Core teachers decide which students they need to pull and mark it in the student’s Planner—Lunch and Learn Pass. 2. Teachers will email the names of the students they will pull to Sauls and Quintana by 10:00 a.m. the morning of their Lunch and Learn. This will allow us to make a final list to give to the cafeteria duty staff. This will give us required documentation of where the student is, should a parent come to check the student out of school. This also means that if you are a Social Studies teacher and, for example, you want to pull a student from your 7th period class on Tuesday, you will have to mark the pass on Monday afternoon. The key to this working smoothly and quickly is getting the list to Sauls/Quintana by 10:00 a.m. in order for the cafeteria duty workers to have a list of students to go by. This would eliminate them having to look at every Student Planner. It would also eliminate a student from hiding his/her Planner if he/she is trying to avoid being pulled for Lunch and Learn. Note: If you normally take students to the Lot first, you will need to do that BUT keep the Lunch and Learn students, and then take them to the cafeteria. 3. All students with a teacher-signed lunch pass will show their Planner pass to a Lunch Duty person, and the students will then be sent to the front of the lunch line. 4. After going through the line, these students will be seated on the two rows closest to the cafeteria entrance, awaiting teacher pick-up. 5. The teacher will then escort students, with their lunches, to the teacher’s classroom. (At this time, pass around the sign-in sheet, to be turned in to Mrs. Mott at the end of each week—no exceptions.) 6. The teacher will keep the students for the remainder of the lunch period, escorting the students outside/to the cafeteria when it is time for class pick-up. The Why….. Past experience has shown that 1) bus students are unable to stay for after-school tutorials, 2) some students run off and then lose daily class time because of ultimate ISS assignments for skipping out, 3) we occasionally have parents that run interference (call in excuses as to why their son/daughter cannot stay after school), and 4) this will give us an additional Tier 2/Tier3 Intervention. Not only will this allow us to tutor these students, it also allows us to keep lunch tutorials small and our after-school numbers smaller, too. In this case, when it comes to addressing students’ academic gaps, the fewer—the better. A Culture of Universal Achievement….. As STAAR passing requirements go up this year, we must look for additional opportunities to address students’ needs. Mann has not been successful because of pockets of hard-working teachers. Our success comes because it “takes a village,” and Mann staff has never backed down from a worthwhile challenge! A Final Note…..If you are a core teacher and do not want to participate in this endeavor, let Mrs. Mott know by Thursday, August 29th, and you will be assigned to lunch duty for the last 10 minutes of your lunch—4 days a week.
