LUNCHROOM SUPERVISION Administrators, I would like to thank everyone that responded to the lunchroom supervision questionnaire from several weeks ago. Below you will see the results on three separate questionnaires that are divided up by grade levels(the first number is how many responded at that specific level. e.g. 13 that responded - 5-8 grade levels). Every school is going to have a unique situation so a blanket recommendation is difficult. However, you may take the following recommendations and customize it for your given situation, then you should be in good shape: a) ratio from students to staff should not exceed 40:1 (the overall number of students should be as small as possible, Sauk Elementary has each homeroom class eat together in their classrooms-average of 25 students) b) ideally you want certified staff as your supervisors due to their relationship with the students (if not all, at least some) c) a structured lunch time will eliminate majority of problems (e.g. eating half the time and reading the other half) d) the movement and interaction of the supervisors amongst the students especially in large settings is critical, & e) having some type of initial training in August and reinforcing expectations through the year (even a brief monthly meeting, CPR training, etc.) is highly recommended. Lunchroom supervision protocol 13 - 5-8 Level 1. Number of lunchroom supervisors in your lunchroom (ratio with students)? 70:1, 125:1, 28:1, 90:1, 25:1, 60:1, 50:1, 200:1, 30:1 2. How the lunch schedule is arranged (grouping of students and grades, and any other information that will be helpful for us to understand how lunchroom monitoring is accomplished)? *Each grade level has their own lunch. *5 and 6 are separate and 7-8 is mixed *Chorus and band students eat together following class *2 teams eat at the same time while the other team is in team interaction period (22 minutes each) Teachers supervise lunch, it's in their schedule (Tinley Park). 3. Do lunch supervisors also cover recess duty? If so, when? *No recess at the junior high for most. *2-3 playground supervisors *Administrators will help 4. Is there an administrator in the lunchroom with the lunchroom supervisors every day (or how often if not everyday)? Frequently, no, each administrator takes a lunch period, 5. Are there teachers or other staff members assigned to the lunchroom in addition to lunchroom supervisors? *No *teachers are supervisors (Kaneland and Tinely Park) *some others have a paid stipend for teachers *offer teachers a free meal to eat in cafeteria but they do not have to handle discipline, hopefully their presence is a deterrent. *Encore teachers are lunch supervisors and there's no additional stipend (Glendale Heights). 6. What is the role of the lunchroom supervisors in your building (discipline, helping students, cleaning tables, etc.)? All of the above, discipline and logistics of lunchroom protocol, helping students, custodians and cafeteria people cleanup, administrators deal with major discipline issues. Lunchroom supervision protocol 8 - K-8 Level 1. Number of lunchroom supervisors in your lunchroom (ratio with students)? 40:1, 50:1, 25:1, 35:1 2. How the lunch schedule is arranged (grouping of students and grades, and any other information that will be helpful for us to understand how lunchroom monitoring is accomplished)? *each grade has lunch together *recess before lunch and/or following lunch. *K-1 building with 175 students has lunch at same time. *combination of recess and lunch 3.
