Appendix C – Individual placement description North Western Foundation School Tameside General Hospital Foundation Programme Individual Placement Description All information to be completed by the LEP. Placement There are 8 four-month FY1 placements within the Department of General Surgery. Each of the eight consultant general surgeons is a Clinical Supervisor for one FY1 trainee. The department 24 bed Surgical Unit. 8 Consultants covering breast, vascular, upper GI and colorectal surgery. General Surgery in a District General Hospital is a busy specialty which offers exposure to a variety of elective and emergency general surgical conditions so there are ample opportunities for Foundation Trainees to obtain skills and competencies required to complete Foundation Year 1 training programme. There are opportunities to perform practical tasks and procedures such as: urinary catheter placement, NGtube placement, ECG, arterial blood gases, incision and drainage procedures, surgical drains removal etc. The type of work to expect and learning opportunities Your responsibilities will be mainly to look after elective and emergency inpatients but each Foundation Trainee is encouraged to attend clinics, multidisciplinary meetings and operating theatres where you can assist at surgery and learn skin suturing. Some surgical patients have serious life threatening conditions and the Foundation Trainees will learn how to recognise and manage critically ill patient and how to deal with dying patients. See GP surgical referrals in A and E when on call In addition to their elective sub-specialty interest all consultants treat emergency general surgical patients and each FY1 will have on-call commitments but all placements are compliant with EWTD. At this early stage of your career you will not work at night. 0800-1600 Monday to Friday. 7 day on call period 0800-2100 every 8 weeks. The hospital has 549 acute beds on the hospital site, excluding Mental illness, which is managed by the neighbouring Pennine Care Mental Health Trust.
