‘Our Neighbours’ Welcome to Term 2. This term, Stage 3 will be learning about ‘Our Neighbours’. We will be investigating our local area and the Central Coast, our beautiful state and our amazingly diverse country. Each state in Australia has a different story to tell; with its history, rich culture, landscape, flora and fauna. We will learn about each state, the capital cities and the amazing things that each state has to offer. We will also ‘take a trip’ around Australia to learn more about its BIG features eg the Big Banana, the Big Pineapple etc. In Creative Arts, we will learn about some Australian artists, learn and perform a uniquely Australian dance and share some songs from our past. In Literacy, we will be experiencing some of Australia’s best poetry including, ‘The Man from Snowy River’. We will be learning about Australian slang, idioms and colloquialisms. This new knowledge will then be used to develop and present a short performance. We will be reading a wide range of visual literacy picture books, informative texts and multi-modal texts including brochures and advertising materials. In Maths, we will learn more about Data, Chance, Position, Addition and Subtraction, numbers, Fractions and many more topics. NAPLAN will be in Week 4 for all students in Year 5. We are confident that all students will do their very best, as they do each day. This will be extended into or History, Science and Geography units as we learn about the rich Aboriginal history of our local area and the early European settlers of the Central Coast. We will investigate the causes and effects of sand erosion and endeavour to find new and innovative solutions. We will also learn about the diversity of the plants and animals that live around us and how they have adapted to their different environments. The ‘Freedom Bus Ride’ had a major impact on our society and we will learn about this. Australians have also achieved amazing things that have served to help our country such as the Snowy Mountain River Scheme and wind farms. These are made possible by our diverse landscape. We will investigate many of these in Geography. This term, there are some staffing changes as we welcome back Mrs Jill Barnett. S3B will now be doubly lucky as they will have two wonderful teachers. Mrs Barnett will teach the class on Tuesday and Wednesday and Mrs Powell will teach the class on Monday, Thursday and Friday. Mrs Powell will also be in the Library on Tuesday and Wednesday.
