Course description:
In this course students will develop, practice, and assess selected diagnostic and
therapeutic skills including: suturing, Foley catheter insertion, phlebotomy, starting IV's,
injections, nasogastric tubes, and intubations prior to entry into their clinical clerkships.
The knowledge base for these procedures will be provided. Students will perform
appropriate diagnostic and/or therapeutic tests on models or classmates.
Prerequisite: Permission of PA Program Chair
Objectives:
Students will:
1. Apply universal precautions when dealing with blood and body fluid components.
2. Explain the rationale for the performance of certain diagnostic procedures.
3. Recognize the indications for selected medical surgical procedures.
4. Perform various medical diagnostic/therapeutic procedures to include:
a) Suturing/Suture removal
b) Insertion of Foley catheters
c) 12 lead Electrocardiograms
d) Injections, intravenous access, arterial blood gases
e) Intubation
5. Explain and manage potential complications associated with the performance of
routine medical surgical procedures.

All students must have access to a computer and an Internet Provider. Use of the NYIT

Required Equipment:
Provided during laboratory sessions.
Special Dress Requirements:
Males and females are to wear shorts; females are to wear a halter top, bathing suit top, or
sports bra. As a requirement of this course students will be broken down into pairs and
will have to perform selected components on one another.
Evaluation Methodology:
Students will be evaluated by multiple choice/fill-in examinations and practical
examinations that are based on lectures, laboratories, handouts, and assigned readings.
Course Requirements:
1. Class Attendance & participation - Attendance is required, missing class will result in
a grade penalty. Students must be prepared for each class and be able to answer
directed questions. Students are allowed to miss two classes. If a student misses two
classes their final grade will be reduced by one full grade, those students missing
more than three classes will be asked to withdraw from the class.
2. A practical midterm and final examination.
3. A cumulative practical final examination that will include all elements from PHAS
325 and PHAS 326 as well as the procedures from this course in an OSCE format.
4. Appropriate attire (see Student Handbook).
