Matusik Class Time: 40 minutes PRIMARY OBJECTIVE/GOAL: - Short biography of Ray Charles and listen to “I’m A Fool For You.” OBJECTIVE: - The student will describe what the feel and hear (instrumentation) when they hear “I’m A Fool For You” sung by Ray Charles. CURRICULUM LINK: - NS #6: Listening to, analyzing and describing music. MATERIALS: - Laptop, projector, screen PROCEDURE: - - - Take attendance (1 min) Review biographical information of W.C. Handy, “Father of the Blues” (3 min) Ask students if they who the “Father of Soul” is. If they do know, ask the students what they know about Ray Charles. If they do not know, start the PowerPoint presentation. (3 min) Give PowerPoint presentation. (15 min) After PowerPoint presentation, ask the students what they thought was interesting about Ray Charles (3 min) Inform students they are going to listen to “I’m A Fool For You” which is sung by Ray Charles and they are going to describe what the feel and what they hear (instrumentation) while listening to the song. (5 min) Ask students to volunteer to share what they wrote down. (5 min) Tell the students the next father they are going to study is the “Father of Rock and Roll”. Ask the students if they know who it is. If they do know, ask what they know about this person. If they do not know, tell them to find out who it is for the next time class meets. (5 min) EVALUATION: - Informal assessment of individuals with observation of who remembered something about W.C. Handy when reviewing material covered from previous class.
