From the Desk of Mrs. Smith:
Holiday greetings! The holiday season is just around the corner and we hope that you
have wonderful plans to spend time with family and friends.
This week at Cornell Grade School is very busy. A few of the events are listed below.
First, the Holiday Christmas Program is on Thursday, December 16. It originally was
set for Monday, but due to the snow day, we moved it to Thursday at 6:30p.m. Please
have your child here at the school and in their classroom by 6:15. A special thank you
to both Mr. Young and Mr. Beirne for planning such an excellent program. I know
everyone will enjoy the program. Second, the K-4 students are planning parties and
many activities over the next few days. Lastly, our junior high students will be having
a surprise on Friday and it should be lots of fun!
Our holiday parties will be on Friday, December 17, starting at 12:45 p.m. with holiday
vacation starting at 2:00p.m. School resumes at 7:55 a.m. on January 3, 2011.
Our students continue to practice ROAR Traits. Please continue to support the ROAR
traits listed below at home as well. Students look to adults for guidance and
consistency. Together we can build ROAR character traits that will last a lifetime.
Remember ROAR stands for
R = Responsible
O = Organized
A = A+ Attitude
R = Respectful
Be sure to check our web site at www.cornellgradeschool.org. This is a great way to
see what is happening at Cornell Grade School. In addition, continue to monitor your
student’s progress through TeacherEase.
If you have any questions or concerns, feel free to contact me at the school (815)3582214 or e-mail me at smitha@cornell.k12.il.us
Have a wonderful holiday season and I hope you are able to spend time with family and
friend. Thanks for supporting our school.

Stay Fit...Don’t Sit!
By: Lynette Cavinder
“Tis the season to sit down and pig out.” With the temperature dropping, it’s time to
come up with some creative ways to get up and get active. Adults and kids alike all need
to keep moving. Here are some fun activities that you and your kids can do over the
holiday break:
Exercise bands are becoming more and more common. They are used for strengthening,
balance, and visual skills. They are easy to use and your kids can exercise with you! You
can stand on it with both feet, the traditional way, for strengthening exercises like bicep
curls, upright rows, lateral raises, and more. You can come up with many other ways to
use your exercise band to keep your body in shape.
You can keep your exercise simple while enjoying it with your child. Have them pick an
animal and both of you move around the room or the house the way that animal moves.
The kids love the parachute at school. You can use a blanket or sheet to create your very
own parachute at home. It really works the upper arms! There are so many different
activities you can do: place stuffed animals on the top and try to shake them off, make a
mushroom and sit under it like a tent, work on opposite movements like move really fast,
move slow, make it go up high, keep it low. If you use your imagination, the activities are
endless.
There are some simple Cardiovascular Games that will bring laughter into your house.
Marching Band: everyone pretends to be in the marching band, playing their favorite
instrument. When you say “switch” everyone turns around quickly and start marching in
the other direction. You can change up the speeds. Blast-off: Everyone crouches low to
the ground and count down from a specified number. When you reach ten, everyone
jumps up high in the air while yelling “Blast Off!” Obstacle Courses: Set up different items
in any order you wish. Try to arrange them according to how fast your kids will go
through each obstacle. Try using a “through the tunnel” obstacle. Your kids will love it!
Don’t forget to go through the obstacle course yourself too!
No matter what it is that you do, if you exercise or play with your kids this Christmas
break, you will get great benefits from it both physically and mentally! Happy Holidays!
PHYSICAL EDUCATION
In January, kindergarten will continue to work on stability skills through jump/land
activities and through dancing/stretching. First through fourth grades will do their
basketball unit and then their nutrition unit. The Jr. High class will do their speedball
unit and then begin Health education in the third quarter. My teacher page on the
school website has all of the general information needed for this course.
Look for the December road runners in the next newsletter.
