Concordia University, St. Paul Music Program Guide
Music Department Mission Statement
The mission of Concordia University, St. Paul, a university of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod, . . .
“Music is a fair gift of God.” (Martin Luther)
“God’s greatest gift to his sorrowing creatures is to offer them JOY worthy of their destiny.” (J.S. Bach)
. . .is to prepare students for thoughtful and informed living, . . .
Music has been at the core of liberal arts education since ancient times; it requires a complex combination of
intellect, emotion, social interaction, and physical activity to create aesthetic expression.
. . .for dedicated service to God and humanity, . . .
Our music programs equip students to serve humanity by sharing and teaching the skills, expression, and joy
of music to all people. These musical skills can be used to praise God in worship and life.
. . .and for the enlightened care of God’s creation.
Music, both in listening and in creating, leads people to a deeper understanding of God’s creation and their
own created selves.
Music Department Purpose Statement
The purpose of the music program at Concordia is to prepare students to become knowledgeable and skilled
musicians who conduct themselves in a professional manner with an understanding of vocation and a
commitment to service.

and correcting errors in these elements.)
4. Performance: Conduct or perform with instrument or voice (appropriate to track) in solo and ensembles with public
performance quality technique and expression.
5. Professionalism/Leadership: Exhibit responsibility and leadership in music course work, performances and activities.
