CHOIR AND THE SINGING FESTIVAL
The choir sounded fantastic on Tuesday at Collis! Well done to all! There are still a few spaces available for any year
5 and 6 pupils who wish to take part in the festival on 25/3/15. It really is going to be quite an event. Mrs Fogg.
YEAR 2 TRIP TO NATIONAL ARCHIVES, KEW
Year 2D and 2M had an interesting and enjoyable time at the National Archives in Kew this week. We looked at
original sources of information from the time of the Great Fire of London. We are proud of our children and were
commended on the questions and the answers that they gave. Many thanks to all the parents who came with us to
help. Mrs Dell’Anno and Miss Murphy.
SAINSBURYS VOUCHERS
We are collecting Sainsburys vouchers again this year. These have been used to provide playground equipment and
cooking equipment in the past. Please send vouchers in with your children. Thank you. Mrs Dell’Anno
FOOTNOTE FROM MRS SMITH
Netball
Congratulations to all who took part in the netball festival on Wednesday. It was quite an occasion. Our team played
incredibly well and narrowly missed the semi-finals – losing 3-1 to St James’. A fantastic effort – well done to all and
a big thank you to Mrs Moss and Mia for their coaching and support.
Year 2
Visited Kew National Archives this week. They had a great time consolidating their learning about the ‘Great Fire of
London’. Feedback from the staff at Kew was very positive; they were impressed by the pupils’ level of knowledge,
their questioning skills and their engagement. A big congratulations to Year 2 for being great ambassadors for Sacred
Heart School.
World Book Day
This will be celebrated again on Thursday March 5th 2015 with the pupils and staff dressing up as their favourite book
character. The children will need to bring in the book that links to their character so that they can take part in some
follow up work on the day.
Note: In a change to the normal run of things on World Book Day, we are going to run a sponsored read this year.
This will require the children to read books in silence for varying amounts of time dependent on their age. Reception
will be looking at 15 mins, Year 1 - 20 mins, Year 2 - 30 mins, Years 3 & 4 - 45 mins and year 5 & 6 - 60 mins – a
challenge I am sure that you would agree. The children will bring out sponsor forms from Monday, we hope that you
will all encourage them in their efforts – all monies raised will go towards improving the class reading resources for
our pupils.
Red Nose Day will be celebrated in school on Friday 13th March 2015. Pupils and staff are encouraged to dress up in
Red for the day with contributions to the charity being collected by our school councillors at the beginning of the day
at the school gates. The PTA will be running a cake sale to supplement the charitable collection – so get your baking
hats on and let’s make this a Red Nose Day to remember.
Plea for Help
Target setting will also be taking place during the week of the 9th March. Target setting sessions will be held over a
couple of mornings for each key stage and the pupils will be involved in junk modelling activities in the classrooms.
Next week they will be working on designing their creations and will need to collect all the resources that they need;
the following week they will then need to complete the construction process. The classes will share what they have
achieved in Friday’s Red Nose Day assembly. Thank you to all who have offered their services, I will be in touch
either directly or through the class teachers with more information on times next week. There is still time to volunteer
as the more people that muck in the better the outcomes for all. Please feel free to drop me an email at
bsmith@sacredheart.richmond.sch.uk or speak to your child’s class teacher if you would be prepared to help. Thank
you.
In School
I am sure that you all appreciate that the safety of our young people is always at the forefront of our minds. It is for
this reason that we have been closing doors more promptly and requesting that the children come into school
unaccompanied at the beginning of the day and at the end of the day, if they need to retrieve anything that is lost. A
big thank you to everyone for supporting us in this. The visitor stickers and signing in system at the school office has
also had a real impact in terms of improving safety. While I would encourage all parents and carers to challenge their
children to find the objects that they have lost independently, I am aware that some of us are very good at ‘looking
and not seeing’. If you need to come into school for such a reason, please come and speak to Mrs Brewin first once
the children have been dismissed by their class teachers, and please be aware that you may well be challenged by staff
as I have asked all to be vigilant and we often have clubs running after school.
Finally
It has been an extremely challenging week in school for a number of reasons.
On Tuesday, our server crashed and we still have a few problems with accessing information, especially on the office
and finance front, so your patience with us at this time is appreciated.
Also on Tuesday, the Diocese, Borough and your Governing Body followed up a gruelling presentation evening on
Monday with an equally rigorous and challenging interview process for the position of head teacher here at Sacred
Heart. I am pleased to announce that all survived the process…just.
On Wednesday, our Chair of Governors announced the outcome of the process to the staff, the pupils and yourselves
and I have been overwhelmed by the level of support that I have received from all quarters since the announcement
was made that I will take over the role of head teacher permanently from the start of the spring term. I feel incredibly
honoured and proud to have been entrusted with this role. I look forward to working with you all to ensure that our
school becomes the best that it can be by delivering the best possible outcomes for all of our young people. Thank you
so much for your messages of support, they mean a lot.
Warmest wishes for a peaceful and happy weekend.
