Welcome back to a new term. This term we welcome Miss Barber-Jones who is a student teacher from Worcester University. She will be working with Mrs Collins in Class 2. There will be a Christingle Service at 2.15pm on Tuesday 12 January at St Peter’s church. Children will be making Christingles for this. Please do join us if you can. For your information, this is what we will be studying this term: The Late Stone Age (Neolithic Hunter) to the Iron Age. Attached to this letter is a summary web of what the children will be learning. Additional information, dates and resources are available on the school website. In addition, the following information is important: Jaguar Maths in Motion Challenge Year 5 and 6 children will be taking part in this international competition designed to inspire young people to follow careers in maths or engineering. The competition starts within the school. Children will work together in small teams using cloud based simulation software to set up and race a virtual car. There will be an inter-school knockout followed by an international competition. To win, the children will need to solve practical maths problems, apply their solutions and beat thousands of other children from around the world who are determined to do the same thing! Our school will be working closely with Jaguar maths and engineering education consultants. Year 5 and 6 children will be taking part in the Shrewsbury Bookfest. This is an exciting opportunity to meet authors, explore new literature, and take part in art and literature competitions. The children will need to read as many books as they can from a selection of six books (if any of the books are too challenging for your child, please read the book to them). In March, they will have the opportunity to vote for their favourite book and will be invited to the Theatre Severn in Shrewsbury, along with other participating schools, for a presentation ceremony and to meet the authors. P.E. In the first half term Monday and Friday P.E. sessions will take place at the village hall. Children will be doing dance and gymnastics with Mr Wellings and Mr Owens. Full P.E. kit (white T-shirt, green sweatshirt, navy blue or black jogging bottoms) and trainers are required. Please keep this kit in school all week as the children are often involved in inter-school events. After half term, P.E. will take place back at school. On Tuesday afternoons the children will take part in outdoor maths and science activities using ideas based on Forest Schools. The children will need to bring waterproof clothing and wellington boots or old outdoor trainers. Spanish will continue to be taught by Mrs Wilson on Monday afternoons. On Monday 29 February the children will be visiting the Appletree Organisation in Ludlow to watch a performance of ‘The Boy Who Bit Picasso’ This performance will be followed by an art workshop. This visit will inspire future class art work. On Wednesday 27 January children in Class 3 will be visiting Shrewsbury museum. They will look at ‘early man’ exhibitions and take part in Stone Age workshops. Class 2 will visit the museum on Thursday 28 January. Details of these visits will follow shortly. In mathematics, the children will cover weekly topics. In Class 2 the children will cover weekly topics in the following order: Ordering & rounding numbers Addition and subtraction Multiplication and division Decimal fractions Dividing 2 digit numbers by 10,100 Money and measures Quadrilaterals Symmetry Co-ordiantes Position and direction Multiplication and division Factors Area and Perimeter Bar charts Continuous data, using tables Fractions of quantities Counting in decimals Measures Money Partitioning In Class 3 the children will cover weekly topics in the following order: Time Pie charts Capacity Area and perimeter Prime numbers / multiplication and division Comparing fractions & problems Negative numbers Addition and subtraction Angles / constructing quadrilaterals Regular and irregular polygons Volume Long multiplication and division Decimals Metric units Measures Line graphs, tables and timetables Reflective, translational and rotational symmetry Fractions/multiplication and division Calculation strategies The children will also complete daily morning maths activities covering all areas of computation. We will continue to work with the mathematics department at Church Stretton Secondary School to assist the development of children’s computation and the progression of skills. Homework Education City homework will be based on topics covered in class. This has been a great success with children consolidating class learning at home. In addition, Year 6 children will also receive two pieces of paper homework per week; on Mondays to be handed in on Fridays and on Fridays to be handed in on Mondays. Reading The children have been asked to keep a record, in their home school links book, of all the books they read and the dates they started them. It is important that they read at home every day and can discuss favourite books by author or genre. This book is also a key link between home and school. Please ask your child to hand in their book if you have any messages. Please do not hesitate to come into school if you want to discuss the books your child is reading; we are always happy to help. Comprehension activities and reading different texts form an integral part of many lessons. All of this is monitored carefully by teachers and support staff. In addition, there is a quiet reading time every day. Each Monday the children will be given spellings from the National Curriculum to learn. The children will have a spelling test the following Monday. Friday mornings will include multiplication tests, mental maths, and homework follow up. Key Stage 2 will be split into 4 groups. Homework club will continue on a Tuesday and Thursday (3.15 – 4.15 pm ) with Miss Carter. The cost is £1.00 per session (subsidies for pupil premium pupils). Nicky Thomsett will pick children up at 4.15pm and transport children on the school mini-bus. Please get in touch with the school office or Nicky Thomsett if you have any queries about this. Thank you Homework project: Children in Key Stage 2 will continue with the assembly rota on a Thursday afternoon. So far this homework has been very successful. As you know, the theme this year is Amazing Artists. Children have been asked to research facts about one artist, talk about why they like the artist or a particular piece of work by the artist and show a piece of their work. The assembly does not need to be lengthy. Children need to think about their audience and make sure they have rehearsed what they want to say. It is very important that your child knows when their slot is and is adequately prepared. If your child needs any support, resources, equipment to make something with or wants to print out something at school, please let us know. We have some resources in school. Children have use of the hall computer and projector. Some children prepare work at home and then copy their work onto powerpoint at school or email the project to head@rushbury.shropshire.sch.uk In the past, children have included short videos, models, drama, costumes and artefacts. The rota is below. A similar list will be on the wall in class so that the children can write in the name of their artist once they have decided. This will avoid repetition.
