TEACHING EXPERIENCE I started my teaching experience as a fellow in Pediatric Infectious Diseases Department, NYU Medical Center (06/93-06/95). During that period, I was responsible for teaching medical students normal newborn examination and pathophysiology (Teaching Assistant in Pediatrics) as well as instructing residents basic knowledge on Pediatric Infectious Diseases. Since 1996, I have been actively involved in the education of medical students and pediatric residents as an Attending Physician of the First, 2nd and most recently 3rd Pediatric clinic of the Athens Medical School, both during rounds and by lectures. Between 2006 – 2011, I was responsible for the Pediatric Resident curriculum at the 2nd Pediatric Clinic at “P&A Kyriakou” Children’s Hospital. Moreover, I actively participate every year in the elective course on Pediatric Infectious Diseases for medical students and have contributed in the composition of the two most recent Pediatric textbooks for medical students edited by the 2nd Pediatric clinic (by Prof A Konstantopoulos and Prof D Kafetzis respectively). To facilitate and encourage continuing education in Pediatrics, I participate with at least 10 lectures/year on various Pediatric Infectious Diseases topics in seminars organized by different University Pediatric clinics and scientific organizations. Since last year I have been invited to participate as well at the Vaccinology summer course organized by the Antwerp University, Belgium (Prof Pierre Van Damme). Most recently, I was asked to edit the chapter on measles of the “Blue Book”. To date, I have supervised 17 PhD students of which six (6) have successfully completed their thesis. Seven (7) students have completed their research work and are now either analyzing their results or preparing their publications and/or thesis, while the other 4 students are involved in ongoing projects. RESEARCH EXPERIENCE Over the past 20 years I have actively participated, planned and executed multiple research projects. Initially the main focus of my work was HIV infection in newborns and children. Over the past years my main interest involves the epidemiology of vaccine preventable diseases (hepatitis A and B, varicella, measles) and vertical transmission of infections such as HCV and CMV. My research has been focused on 6 main subjects: • HIV infection • Vertical transmission of infections (HBV, HCV and CMV) • Epidemiology of vaccine preventable infections (HAV, HBV, VZV) • Antibiotic consumption in the community • Immunology of infection (vertical HBV infection, VZV CMI) • Stress and reactivation of herpesviruses • Respiratory infections among pediatric cancer patients I have participated as sub-investigator in multiple vaccine clinical trials (HPV, MMRV, Flumist, MenACWY, PCV10). To accomplish my research goals I have been actively collaborating with multiple (about 10) research centers and laboratories in Greece and Europe. I have organized and executed four National Multicenter studies . Have published 75 papers in peer reviewed journals with a total IF= 276. Although my total citations are ~715 and h-factor 12. My research activity is most recognizable in reference to epidemiology of vaccine preventable infections and mainly viral hepatitis and varicella-zoster-virus. I have been invited as a reviewer by esteemed journals such as PIDJ, Vaccine, Journal of Infection, Clinical and Vaccine Immunology, The Journal of Travel Medicine & Infectious Diseases and International Journal of Infectious Diseases.
