GET EXPERIENCE IN A PRIMARY OR SECONDARY SCHOOL, OR A SIXTH FORM COLLEGE Schools and Colleges Programme 2009/10 What is it? There are two options within the programme: a) Volunteering in a Primary School Involves volunteering alongside teachers in local primary schools and special schools. Students do not replace teachers but actively support them in the classroom. They can work individually or in pairs, but always under the supervision and direction of class teachers. Students can participate in a whole range of activities including: listening to pupils read and helping with basic literacy skills working with a group of pupils within the classroom on a specific project providing in-class support with IT work helping out with drama productions in the classroom helping pupils with basic numeracy helping teachers organise displays of pupils’ work b) Volunteering in a Secondary School or College Generally involves mentoring GCSE and A level students in secondary schools and local colleges. Students work with individuals or very small groups of pupils to encourage and support them in their studies. They sometimes work in specific subject areas or more generally help pupils with their study skills or time management. The aim is to help the pupils improve their performance, raise their aspirations and increase their self-confidence. Being mentored helps pupils: develop time management and organisational skills discuss approaches to studying plan out revision work on improving attendance and punctuality focus on particular difficulties with a subject motivate themselves build confidence and self esteem Mentoring meetings take place at the school or college in a space that offers some degree of privacy and this will be organised by the school. In some cases students will work within the classroom assisting teacher, rather than mentoring students individually. Am I eligible to take part?
