How do you introduce the idea of career exploration and college or career school investigation to a ninth grader? As adults, we recognize the significance of planning for the future and using the high school curriculum as a means of attaining future goals. The School Counseling Department at North Allegheny has developed a tool to help facilitate the career and college planning appropriate to the various high school levels. Through the use of the online career and college program, CHOICES, students will create personal online career and college portfolios. The CHOICES high school career and education solution has been designed to empower students through engaging and easy to use resources. These resources will provide students with valuable insight and greater knowledge about their personal aptitudes, personality types, and learning styles. Each of these elements is valuable in building the self-awareness needed to connect students to relevant occupations. The combination of CHOICES’ research-based assessments, comprehensive network of schools, programs and career profiles enables students to discover how their interests and skills relate to particular career fields. Focusing on five areas, CHOICES directs students, teachers, and parents on a sequential career and education exploration. The information will be maintained in an electronic portfolio utilized from year to year. Below, you can find instructions to log onto this program. You may wish to preview the program or explore on your own. Either way, we feel confident that you will be pleased with the CHOICES program and its capabilities. 1. Go to www.bridges.com 2. The ACT Aspire replaces the ACT Plan test this year. By assessing students in English, math, reading, science, and writing, the ACT Aspire will allow our 10th graders to determine if they are on target for college readiness as they prepare to take the ACT test (in grade 11) and engage in college and career planning. More information will be provided to students during our Counseling Orientation at the beginning of the school year, and on the NAI website. In addition, the Counseling Office will offer support groups throughout the year. Support groups are voluntary and cover a variety of topics.
