4-6 GRADE PE/RECESS RESPONSES Hope everyone has had a great summer! I have a few questions that I need answers to for data collection. How many schools have a recess for 4th - 6th grades? How long? Of those, how many have PE 5 days a week. Do you have a lunch with a recess attached to it? Do you have a morning recess before school begins? Your help is greatly appreciated! We are a K-5 building. Kids can arrive after 8:30 and play on the playground until the bell rings at 8:55 (with supervision). All kids get a 25 min. recess and a 25-30 min. lunch period. Kids in 3-5 get a 15 min. recess in the afternoon, as well. We only have PE 2 days per week, so that pm recess is supposed to be "structured" to meet the PE req. No recess at all. Gym at least 2 x a week, we do have a lunch with 20 minutes recess each day (equivalent of 100 mins) Our 4th graders have P.E. every day and they have two recesses. One is attached to the lunch recess and the other is a 15 minute recess in the morning. Our 5/6 graders have P.E. every day and a lunch recess. Before school the 5/6 graders sit in the gym and the k-4 kids have a walk and talk where they just walk around the gym in the same direction and talk until the bell rings. We used to have a recess for our k-4 kids, but switched to the walk and talk last year. Things went really well with it. At our school, we had P.E. every other day. Students were given a 10-20 minute recess each day after lunch. We have lunch with a recess attached for 5-6, our 4th have another recess in the mornings. We have 5/week PE for all grades K-12. Hope this helps. My building is also 4th through 6th. Students get a 20 minute recess after lunch and have P.E. each day for 30 minutes. We have 5-8 here and we run a 40 min lunch period for 5/6 and then another 40 for 7/8. They eat 20 min and then have recess for 20. We run on the modified block system so we have PE for 40 min every Monday and then 80 minutes for 2 of the next four (depending on A or B day) So that would be the equivalent of 20 min recess daily and 40 daily PE Here's our Elementary school data for you: 4-6th grade recess: Yes-after lunch for 15 minutes all grades-recess after lunch all grades (k-6)-PE daily for 25 minutes (No comment on that one:)) all gradesno morning recess before school begins Grades 4 - 6 have a 15 minute recess in the afternoon plus Lunch and recess is 45 minutes; students typically eat for 20 minutes (or until finished if more time is needed) and then go outside to recess plus PE for 20 min/day for 5 days/week GIS - 4th and 5th grade The only recess we have is during our lunch time. Students have recess for about 20 minutes, about 5 min. for transition, and about 20 minutes for lunch. It's a 45 minute period so the transitions may be a little longer or a little shorter depending on a lot of circumstances. We have PE four times per week. We have recess for 4th and 5th attached to lunch with 5 days of P.E. We do not have recess for 6th and still have 5 days P.E. To answer your questions: My 4th and 5th graders have only a 25 minute recess after lunch. They don't have any additional recesses during the day. Intermediate School is a grade 4-5 building. We do not have recess during the day. We do not have a playground on our campus. We do have PE 5 days a week (30 minute periods). Our lunch periods are 30 minutes in length. Students have the opportunity to go into the gym after lunch for up to 10 minutes to shoot baskets, jump rope, walk around the perimeter of the gym or talk and visit. We do not have a morning recess. The students arrive in the morning and sit in the bleachers and visit with other students before the school day begins. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any additional questions or need any other information. This year is the first year of 5 day a week P.E. for grades 1-5. No recess for 3-5 except for lunch recess. Grades 1-2 have recess in the part of the day that they don't have P.E. No before school recess. We have a short recess after lunch for every grade (K - 8). The students are divided into three lunch groups. In addition, all classes have five PE/HEALTH periods per week. My school is 6-8 grades and they all have PE daily for 43 minutes with no recess. They do have a 30 minute lunch, but no recess attached to it. Our elementary schools which include grades 4,5 have a 15 min. morning recess and a 20 minute lunch recess. My 5th & 6th graders have PE 20 minutes each day instead of their noon recess. I have assigned an aide to assist the PE teacher and they take 2 groups at a time. Kids expend energy in a structured play situation. Office referrals have significantly decreased. Teachers can still take their kids for a recess break anytime they want (they don't) or as an end of the week reward for working hard. I am at a three - five building. Students have a 40 minute lunch/recess. 20-25 minutes is for lunch and the remaining time is for recess. We have PE 4 days a week. When classes do not have PE, they must have 15 minutes of "movement ed" in their rooms. Our 6th graders attend a middle school. They do not have recess. It has been the practice at Payson to have actual PE class every day for Every student, like the state requires. It is my understanding that many Schools do not follow this rule. When I asked about it, I was told that they counted recess as the physical activity. I am assuming that this has been accepted by the state. They may also have received a waiver for some reason. But when I investigated this possibility, a state official told me that in order for recess to count, we have to have specific PE lesson plans in place and they have to be followed with a certified teacher during that time. We have a lunch recess and an afternoon recess too for 4-6th. They do have PE almost every day, one time a week with a specialist and probably 2-3 additional times a week with their teacher. Also, no am recess before school for anyone, (got them too wound up before school), Good Luck! Grade School (Southern Illinois) provides a 20 minute lunch recess for three lunch periods (K-2, 3-5, and 6-8). Each student also receives PE from a certified PE teacher four times a week (approximately 30 minutes). To comply with the required PE minutes, each homeroom teacher (certified staff member) is responsible for a PE/health/life/safety 20-30 minutes on the day that their students are not scheduled for PE. Unusual, but approved by our regional superintendent. We are a 3-5 building and we have PE every other day. We have a 20 min lunch recess every day. We have PE daily for grades K-8 and they have recess which is between 10-15 mins before or after lunch. Younger grades may go out one more time for 10-15 mins but not past 2 or 3rd grade.
