I look forward to a mutually beneficial learning experience with you. My intention is to forge a partnership with you in order to maximize your learning experience. I expect that you will increase your overall knowledge in the science of Psychology, and that we will have fun in the process as well. You will get out of this class as much or as little as you will put into it. Since Psychology deals with human behavior, including our own behavior, we are likely to touch upon some issues that may concern you personally. I hope that you will take this as an opportunity, and apply some of your newfound knowledge to enhance and empower your life and yourself. Please understand this course is not designed to be a therapeutic environment. If and when a student feels the need for an outside referral, the instructor will provide one if necessary. I always recommend visiting the college’s counseling services - they will be your best source of information and help. Check the professor’s website for the Ventura College Health Center link as well as other resources and referral sites. The following structure is designed to enhance this class’ optimum learning environment. Please read and understand each point clearly. Then sign your name to express your agreement of this course’s expectations. Please sign and date this contract; return it to me by the specified date in your syllabus. Your signature also implies that you have read the syllabus in its entirety and that you agree with its content. If you have any questions regarding the syllabus it is your responsibility to ask questions. CLASSROOM ETIQUETTE: I realize that in order to maximize my experience in this class, I must be a responsible student, to myself, to my classmates, and to my professor. 1. Disruptive behaviors will not be tolerated and will result in formal warnings. Three such warnings will result in a referral to the appropriate dean, who will ultimately determine a fitting course of action. Expulsion from class may also be indicated if deemed appropriate. 2. Private conversations are to be reserved for breaks and after class; I understand that I may be asked to leave if I disrupt the class in session, and doing so will constitute a formal warning. 3. Electronic equipment must remain in the off position. This includes but is not limited to cell-phones, IPods, portable CD players, electronic games, etc. 4. Participation is required and constitutes a portion of my grade. High caliber sharing demands polite, respectful language, and undue criticism. 5. Any clarification or problem regarding an assignment, a peer, or the professor needs to be communicated to Professor Capuano-Brewer at the earliest possible sign. 6. Full, receptive attention is necessary, with no private activity occurring at my desk, such as other course homework. This may constitute another cause for a formal warning, and a possible request to leave the class in session. CLASSROOM ATTENDANCE: 1. I understand that classroom attendance is mandatory. 2. Attendance involves arriving on time, and remaining in class from the start of class to its finish. 3. If I am more than ten minutes late to class, I will not interrupt the class in session. Moreover, if the professor informs me that I am late, I will discreetly and quietly leave to return to the next class session promptly on time. 4. Any departure from class mid-stream must be communicated to the professor prior to class. (You must plan ahead if you need to leave class for any reason.) Lucy Capuano - Brewer, M. A. Psychology. If I miss more than NINE LECTURE SESSIONS, I will be automatically dropped by the instructor. If I am late to class, or if I leave early, this will count as a missed session. Once I am dropped, there is no possibility of reinstatement. 6. It is my responsibility to drop this class if I wish to do so. Failure to drop on time will result in an F in the class. The professor has the right to drop me based on non-attendance. 7. It is also my responsibility to keep track of my test scores, and any and all documents submitted to the instructor. I need to verify test dates, assignment dates, and check with other students for changes in the course schedule. 8. It is my responsibility to sign in every time I attend class. CLASSWORK: 1. Assignments are due as announced, unless otherwise specified by the professor. 2. Written assignments are to be typed: double-spaced, 11-12 point font, stapled (no folders), and must reflect proofreading and neatness. When appropriate, assignments must follow APA format. All required forms must be submitted on time as specified. Points will be deducted accordingly. (No handwritten or e-mailed proposals/projects will be accepted). (See the section on research project for more detailed information). 3. Tests or assignments cannot be made up or rescheduled. (Students are allowed to drop or miss only one of the regular tests without compromising their grade). (See the section on tests for more detailed information). 4. All typed work must be submitted directly to the professor at the beginning of class on/prior to the date the project is due. Papers delivered to her mailbox or her office will not be accepted, and will get 0 points. Handwritten, e-mailed and late research projects will get 0 points. (Please note: projects turned in at the end of the session on the date they are due – will be considered late) 5. It is my responsibility to ask for clarification and to follow directions for the research project. If I fail to do so, points will be deducted accordingly. STUDENT RESPONSIBILITY: I agree to the above requirements, and look forward to this structure freeing up the class environment for the maximum teaching/learning experience.
