COME TO THE FAIR!! Thursday 24th October will be the opening day of the Castle Donington Wakes. The fair is held in the main streets of Castle Donington and will be open Thursday and Friday evenings, 6.00pm-10.00pm and Saturday afternoon and evening, 2.00pm-10.00pm. The Chairman of Castle Donington Parish Council, Colin Burton, along with a representative of the Midlands Section of the Showmen’s Guild will officially open this year’s Wakes event. Invitations to the opening event have been sent to Mr Andrew Bridgen MP and local dignitaries of North West Leicestershire District Council and Leicester County Council. Bookings for the fair include the usual large thrilling rides for the brave-hearted, plus ones for the younger generation and some for those in-between – some new ones are arriving this year – and as always there will be a wide variety of game stalls to test your skill (and eye sight!) plus a variety of food kiosks – hot dogs, toffee apples, candy floss, etc. The tradition of the street fair is 733 years old this year: the right to hold the Wakes was granted by King Edward I to Henry de Lacy on 26 May 1278. Castle Donington’s Charter is one of the oldest charters in existence and is a part of our heritage that we should be proud of. Some free ride tickets will be handed out to local children at the opening which will enable the lucky recipients’ one free juvenile ride on Thursday night only. As usual, there will be road closures and parking restrictions in force in various locations within the village – anyone wanting to know any details of these are welcome to contact the Parish Council office on 01332 810432 or call into the office on Hillside, Castle Donington during public open hours of 10.00 am to 12.00 noon Monday to Friday. VISIT THE FAIR AND ENJOY YOURSELF!!
