Ms. Owen-Grade KDG

The students in Room 130 have been working so hard these first two months of school. I am so incredibly proud of each student and the hard work and efforts they have put forth through the first grading period. We have been learning sounds, words and even reading books already! We are working in writing to make sure that our pictures tell a story and realizing that if you can tell a story, then you can write a story! It is so exciting to watch the children begin to realize they are authors! We are beginning to hear the sounds in the words that we want to write and adding those to our stories as well. In Math, we have been practicing counting to 50 and making sets to 10. We've also learned how to write the numbers 1-10. We can't believe that it is the end of October already but we have accomplished so much and have much learning ahead of us!

Mrs. Arroyo-Grade 1

Braden Bowen is my student of the month. He is a very honest boy and will always tell the truth. He is a wonderful role model to others when it comes to being honest.

Class Highlights: Our class is continuing to learn strategies to help us with addition and subtraction. We are learning both addition and subtraction facts up to 12! We have been learning many strategies to make us better readers. We know how to predict and confirm our prediction. We also know how to find the key details and to visualize the story to help us with retelling. Mrs. Arroyo was working hard to get our stations ready and we have been learning how to work with a partner and complete an activity. Mrs. Arroyo can work with small groups of students while we are working at our stations. They are so much fun!!

Ms. Lauricia/ Ms. Hayden/Mr. Balint-Grade 2

Second grade students recently started a new reading unit about animals. Along with improving our reading fluency and comprehension, we're learning what animals need to survive, and how they adapt, or change. All of this reading ties into our science unit on animals. We are learning about animals and their environments/habitats.

We had a lot of fun with our math unit on repeated addition and arrays. We saw how it is related to multiplication. One of our favorite activities was using

Cookie Crisp cereal to create arrays of "cookies" on foil baking sheets. The results were delicious.

In social studies we learned about how timelines can be used to highlight important events in a person's life.

Watch for your child to bring home a timeline to complete about themselves.

Thank you to the parents who have been working with their students to complete the nightly Fluency and Read

& Respond forms. Practice makes improvement, and most students showed a solid increase from their

September to October fluency scores.

We're looking forward to seeing the students who completed a book report dress up as a character in their book for the parade! We hope everyone can participate.

Mrs. Torres-Grade 3

Ms. Torres's Third Grade Class has been hard at work learning 3 digit subtraction with regrouping. This has been difficult for some students. Parents please continue to work at home on this concept. We will continue reteaching using Simple Solution Math, Study Island, and IXL math.

We begin Multiplication - Topic 4 now. The students are very excited. All students should continue to memorize their addition, subtraction, and begin multiplication facts too. In

Reading, we just ending the Unit on Folktales. Students read the folktale Anansi the Spider, the spider tricked his friend the turtle. Then the turtle taught him a lesson and tricked him back with the help of his friends. The Spider was not happy. A folktale usually teaches a lesson. The students enjoyed reading folktales. In Science, we finished a lesson on how animals use camouflage to adapt to an environment. We hid our own insects in the room, then we tried to find them. Some of those insects were hard to see.

That experiment was educational and fun as well. Great job, room 210. Parents, please make sure to practice fluency each night. It is very important for their reading comprehension success.

My student of the month for honesty is Evangeline Rivera.

She is a very honest and hardworking student. She is always letting me know if something is wrong. She tells the truth, and I know I can count on her. Great job,

Evangeline.

Mrs. Raesler-Grade 4

The students in my class have been working very hard!

They all deserve congratulations for that! In math, many more students have been moving forward to pass their math fact tests. Nathalia Carter, Jared Keiffer Jr.,

Luis Otero, and Aidan Tony have passed all four tests.

Way to go! We have also been adding and subtracting multi- digit numbers. In reading, we have been determining the main idea of a story and the details that support it. Ask them to tell you about what they learned when they researched the transportation types and how they were important to Ohio.

Ms. Zimmerman-Grade 3

M s. Zimmerman’s grade 3 student of the month is

Azariyah Rector.

Azariyah comes to school each day prepared to be challenged. She is very patient, kind, and respectful in collaborative groups. She assists students who are still working on organizational skills. She likes to sing and dance with her peers on the playground. She stays after school for Boys and Girls club where she continues to work hard.

Zimmerman Grade 3 October Hi-lights

During the month of October our class was busy creating arrays to represent multiplication problems. We are taking weekly multiplication fact tests so that we won’t be seen counting on our fingers or on our toes.

Our Science focus is on the world around us. We are learning to differentiate between living and nonliving things in our environment. On Monday, October 27 we took a closer look at our outdoor environment in order to recognize living and nonliving elements of our surroundings.

We are celebrating Halloween through reading.

Students had the opportunity to read a book and share it through a book report. Students who completed the book report were encouraged to dress up like a character in the book they read and participate the character parade on Friday October 31 st .

Students who had perfect attendance in the first grading period and turned in all homework assignments will be included in a reward party recognizing their hard work and achievement.

Mrs. Herbert-Grade 4

Room 214 student of the month is Breanna Smith.

Breanna is a conscientious and diligent student who completes all her work thoroughly, participates in class and comes to school every day ready to learn! I am pleased to call her our student of the month.

Room 214 has had a great month in October! Daniel

Devine has reached 11 points in Accelerated Reader, and is at the head of our class! Breanna Smith, Madison

Altman, and Teon Lenor have passed all 4 math facts tests, proving that they are truly math masters! We have enjoyed testing the scientific method and learning the history of Ohio and the Ohio River. We continue to work hard at mastering reading comprehension and vocabulary, and adding and subtracting multi-digit whole numbers. It is great to be a 4th grader at Larkmoor

Elementary School!

Classroom Highlights at Larkmoor School

Ms. Renner-Grade 4

I have chosen Amy Felicie as Room 215 Student of the

Month. Amy is always willing to help in the classroom, whether to straighten up or help a classmate. Amy is an asset to Room 215 and Larkmoor School. Also, Room 215 has been very busy sharpening up their addition and subtraction skills in math. In social studies, we are continuing to learn about our state of Ohio. Students have also been learning about various genres in language arts, and please encourage your child to read nightly. Please feel free to call or send a note if you have any questions or concerns. Thanks Ms. Renner

Mrs. Gojevic-Grade 6

I am nominating Elena Flecha for our student of the month.

She is my hard-working homework helper and is very honest when she reports back to me on students that have not completed their homework. In addition, Elena recently told me that my SMARTBoard was still on when I was passing out quizzes to students and one of the problems we reviewed was displayed. Thank you, Elena, for being a fine example to others with your honesty.

In Math, we are working on our fractions unit.

Students began the unit by learning The Property of

One algorithm to simplify and make equivalent fractions. Students are putting to use their knowledge of Least Common Multiple to add and subtract fractions. Additionally, students are beginning to apply what they are learning from standard algorithms and fraction models to solve real world problems with parts of a whole.

In Science, we are completing our unit on minerals, rocks, and soil. Students did a great job organizing their knowledge of Extrusive and Intrusive Igneous

Rocks in a "Top Hat Organizer" that is displayed in the hall outside the classroom. We will wrap up this unit in the next week and begin our next unit on Cells in 6th grade and the Solar System in 5th grade.

Mrs. Schuster-Grade 5/6

The 6th grade is ready for Quarter 2!!!! It's a brand new chance to showcase positive behaviors and improvements where they are needed. We just finished comparing Symbols and Symbolism in our stories, "The

Sound of Summer Running," and "Eleven." We have also started to work on Autobiographical Narratives in Writing.

We are really excited about the Culture Fair coming up on November 25th. Remind students at home about the approaching "due dates" for their project. Again, we appreciate your support and hope to see you at the

Culture Fair :)
