Art History 9th – 12th Teacher: Cristen Oliver In this class we will study a variety of historical art techniques and styles from various historical periods, so that the students will be able to gain insight into artistic thought and have a better understanding of Art History. Book Requirement: The Annotated Mona Lisa (A Crash Course in Art History From Prehistoric to Post Modern) By: Carol Strickland, Ph.D. ISBN# 0-8362-8005-9 It will require a lot of at home reading and moderate homework. Students will receive grades throughout the 12 weeks, which will be averaged together for a final grade. **Students will be required to keep a notebook for this class, which will be part of their grade. Final Project: Students will research an artist that they like and prepare a project to be presented during class towards the end of the 12 weeks. The project must show that they have fully researched the artist and be presented in an artistic manner that shows the artist’s style. More information will be provided in class. The Ancient World Week 1: Greek Art (650 – 146 B. C. E.) {Before the Common Era or Before the Christian Era} Figurative Sculpture – Greek sculptors were the first to render the human figure in a natural, relaxed style. The Middle Ages {526 – 1500} Week 4: Gothic Art and Architecture (1150 – 1500) The basic spirit of the Middle Ages in Europe was religious, so everything was centered on the church and decorating it. We will begin creating a Rose {Stained Glass} Window and answer questions from web site reading. Middle Ages and Gothic Architecture Handouts. Bring a manual pencil sharpener, any old crayons (if you have some) your Rose Window and scissors for next week. Week 5: Complete our Rose Windows Once you window is complete you may work on your Final Project. Homework: Read: The Rebirth of Art: pgs. 30 – 45 Remember to keep working one your Final Project. (You should have an artist by now) Week 6: Midterm and notebook check! *We will take pictures to make silhouettes for next week’s selfportrait. Bring scissors, glue sticks, and colored pencils or crayons to class next week. The Renaissance {1400 – 1600} Week 7: Giuseppe Arcimboldo {1527 – 1593} Non-traditional Self Portrait. Symbolism in Renaissance paintings became very popular as a status symbol. Students will create a {Who Am I?} self-portrait. Do: Ruben’s Workshop project if time allows. Week 8: Sidewalk art was a tradition since the 16th century. “Madonnari," or street painters are enjoying a rebirth throughout Europe and the United States. Using the pavement as their canvas and chalk as their medium we will transform a sidewalk into a beautiful work of art. Baroque, Rococo and Romantic Handouts. Impressionism {1874 -1886} – Post Impressionism {1886 - 1905} Week 9; Impressionist and Pointillist Techniques Students will begin writing an essay on one the Ism’s. They will then work on imitating techniques of Claude Monet {1840 – 1926} and Georges Seurat {1859 – 1891}. Pass out Impressionism / Post Impressionism Handout. Expressionism {1905 - 1913} Week 10: Expressionist artists aimed to shock in order to make people think and create emotions when looking at their art. Norwegian Expressionist Edvard Munch {1863 – 1944} directly expressed human feeling in his art. Students will pick an emotion and show that feeling by molding it into clay or by drawing a picture and then present it to the class for student evaluation. Expressionism Handout.
