Wonderful Words Wednesday
Suntree Elementary will hold its first annual Wonderful Words Wednesday on
January 25, 2012. This very special day is part of the school’s continuing
emphasis on vocabulary development. It is our hope that students will enjoy this
activity while increasing their vocabulary, and we hope that all students, grades
K-6, will create a project.
The idea for the parade comes from the book Miss Alaineus: A Vocabulary
Disaster by Debra Frasier. We can’t wait to see what wonderful words you will
bring!
Suntree’s students will each choose a word to learn for Wonderful Words
Wednesday. Students are encouraged to create a costume, hat or poster to
creatively present their chosen word. The project can convey the chosen word in
a creative, humorous or interesting way. Students may choose a word from
reading, science, social studies, reading, math, or any other interesting location.
The goal of this activity is to increase student vocabulary and present words
NOT already in the student’s speaking vocabulary to the greatest extent possible.
We would expect that the older children would choose more difficult vocabulary
words. All students will have the opportunity to share their words since the goal
of Wonderful Words Wednesday is to give students exposure to a variety of new
words.
The teachers are looking forward to a fabulous, marvelous, amazing,
stupendously exciting day of learning new words and increasing our vocabulary.
School-Wide Book Buddies – 9:15-9:30
All students will be reading to each other across the entire campus at the same
time!
Character Dress Up Day
Students and teachers lend an ear
As dress-up day is drawing near;
Choose a character from any book
Be clever and creative while creating their look
Have a parade or party down
As we celebrate literacy across our Suntree town!
As part of our Literacy Week, we invite everyone to bring books to life through
their characters on Friday, January 27, 2012. Choose any of your liking…it can
be a favorite, the funniest, the cutest (heard there will be several “Fancy Nancy’s
roaming around), most clever—or yes, simply the easiest to create. Have fun,
and spread the joy of reading; share the pages that are home to your character!
Set aside some time to read the book, a chapter of the book, or simply the best
parts of the book.
