Office of Orientation and Leadership Development Orientation Leader Position Description The Office of Orientation and Leadership Development has a dual focus. One aspect of the office has the primary focus of assisting new students and their families as they transition to the University through comprehensive programs that take place throughout a calendar year. The other focus of the office is providing information and training to undergraduate students in leadership development. To support these efforts, the Office of Orientation and Leadership Development will hire a team of undergraduate student orientation leaders (OLs). Required Qualifications Multi-task oriented Strong communication skills Positive attitude Ability to receive and give feedback in a professional manner Ability to work with a variety of audiences Dependable, flexible, and responsible Familiarity with University policies and procedures University of Utah undergraduate student in good standing with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 Have a clean University of Utah disciplinary record Be a current, full time undergraduate student for the 2014-2015 academic year Leadership - Welcoming - Inclusive of persons from a diversity of backgrounds - Shares passion for the U - Thoughtful - Takes initiative in helping and supporting others - Engaging - Approachable Teamwork - Works well and shares responsibility with team members - Demonstrates followthrough - Enthusiastic & energetic - Unique skills in a team - Represents the variety of experiences of U students Professionalism - Uses good examples and appropriate language, particularly working with campus partners - Punctual - Reliable & committed - Flexible & open to change Knowledge - Willing to learn and utilize - Knowledge of the University of Utah - Understanding of students in transition - Awareness of parent & family members needs and support Responsibilities Attend the following required trainings & events: o OL Welcome Dinner – October 1, 2014 o Learning to Lead Leadership Conference – October 4, 2014 o Orientation Leader Retreat – November 14-15, 2014 o Register for and successfully complete the orientation leader training course- LDRSP 3960 (3 credit hours) during Spring 2015 o Attend Orientation Leader Intensive Training- May 26-June 5, 2015 Work all Spring, Summer, and Fall semester Orientation Programs o Spring 2015 First-Year & Transfer Orientations – 7:45am until 3:00pm 1 Friday, November 21 Monday, November 24 Saturday, December 6 Wednesday, December 10 o Summer 2015 First-Year &Transfer Orientations – 7:45am until 3:00pm Wednesday, April 8 Friday, May 15 o Fall 2015 Transfer Orientations – 7:45am until 3:00pm Friday, May 1 Friday, May 29 Monday, June 8 Friday, June 19 Monday, June 22 Monday, July 6 Friday, July 17 Wednesday, July 22 First-Year Orientations – 2 days – 7:45am Day 1 to 5:00pm Day 2 Thursday & Friday, June 11 & 12 Monday & Tuesday, June 15 &16 Wednesday & Thursday, June 17 & 18 Tuesday & Wednesday, June 23 & 24 Thursday & Friday, June 25 & 26 Monday & Tuesday, June 29 & 30 Tuesday & Wednesday, July 7 & 8 Thursday & Friday, July 9 & 10 Monday & Tuesday, July 13 & 14 Wednesday & Thursday, July 15 & 16 Monday & Tuesday, July 20 & 21 Serve as a critical link for entering students to the University Facilitate small groups with new students and parent & family members Lead and participate in group cheers and skits Make students, parents, and families feel welcome and a part of the University Provide campus tours Frequently speak in front of large and small groups Be able to motivate and excite students Attend all scheduled orientation functions Work Welcome Week August 2015 Benefits Orientation Leaders are required to work fulltime starting May 26-August 2014 and compensation will be a stipend of $2500 for May-August 2014. On-campus housing will also be provided for OLs from May 26-July 23, 2015. Additionally, OLs will gain the intrinsic value of having served the new incoming class of Utah students, have the opportunity to develop their leadership abilities and 2 professional skills, and receive mentoring from University of Utah professional staff members. Successful Orientation Leaders exemplify four leadership characteristics: Leadership, Teamwork, Professionalism, and Knowledge. The Office of Orientation & Leadership Development seeks candidates who can speak to their experiences in these arenas. The chart below provides some explanation of these characteristics including various skills and experiences for each. Application Timeline The application process includes the proper completion of the Orientation Leader Application (includes paper application and attendance at 1 Orientation Leader Info Session), a group interview, and an individual interview. Preliminary decisions will be made once all applications have been received and the most qualified applicants will be invited to participate in the personal and group interviews.
