JOB TITLE:

SUMMARY:
Responsible to lead the medical multi-disciplinary activities of the Trauma Program. Pursues
the development of the Trauma program in terms of quality of care, volume, scope of services,
and cost–effectiveness. Manages the overall physician, surgeon component of the Trauma
Service. Works closely with the hospital medical staff, administration, department heads,
ancillary services, nursing personnel, EMS agencies, community hospitals, and law enforcement
agencies with regards to all aspects of trauma care.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
1. Management of trauma care in a multi-disciplinary system.
2. Participate in the education of staff and the community on current trauma care concepts.
3. Coordinates and participates in trauma quality improvement activities.
4. Ensures that prevention activities are an integral part of a trauma care delivery system.
5. Collaborates with the Trauma Program Manager to meet goals and objectives of the Trauma Program.
6. Oversees the medical care given to patients on the Trauma Service.
7. Reviews all trauma physician privileges and maintains credentials.
8. Participate in regional, state and national trauma organizations.

operational effectiveness and customer satisfaction.
Oversees all trauma related research activities.

3. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTY: Maintains quality improvement and data collection of

Coordinates, chairs and participates in relevant trauma medical QA and peer
review activities as required by the Medical Staff, Trauma Service, and Hospital.

Oversees the identification of patients admitted, who meet identified criteria, for
inclusion in Trauma services.
Monitor and assess trauma care services provided, from admission through
discharge and follow-up. Utilizes chart review, staff and physician interviews,

Performs financial analysis of Trauma Services, including impact of patient
outcome. Identifies and implements cost saving measures, including the
utilization of national standards/protocols where they apply.
Assists in identification of needed equipment and the evaluation of new
equipment.
Ensures trauma care provided in a timely fashion through monitoring response
times.

6. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTY: Oversees the medical care given to patients on the
Trauma Service

Rounds on all in-house trauma patients and discusses their care with the nursing
and medical staff.

Reviews the plan of care for trauma patients to ensure that protocols were
initiated and followed.

Participates in trauma rounds/staffing twice weekly with a multi-disciplinary team,
including nursing staff, respiratory therapy, physiatry, nutrition, pharmacy,
discharge planning, etc…

Manages patients in consultation with referring physicians and provides feedback
regarding clinical care.

Makes appropriate referrals for specialty services and communicates with the
consulting physician as appropriate.
7. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTY: Reviews all trauma physician privileges and maintains
credentials.

Recommends and approves, in conjunction with the Trauma Committee, qualified
trauma team privileges.

Authority to suspend or re- instate a surgeon’s privileges to participate in the
Trauma System, in cooperation with the Trauma Committee

Oversees ongoing education for new and existing attending surgeons and
physicians as appropriate.

Performs an annual review (credentialing) process of all Trauma Surgeons, and
specialists participating in trauma care.

Ensures establishment of physician/surgeon call schedules for all specialties,
including those that require a back up call schedule.
8. ESSENTIAL JOB DUTY: Participates in regional, state and national trauma
organizations.

Participates in the regional EMS and Regional Trauma Advisory Council (RTAC)
meetings.

Participates in the State Trauma Advisory Council (STAC) meetings.

Member of the American College of Surgeons as a Fellow as able.

Involvement with trauma legislative activities.
