Lecture Class
For each lecture class, you will need paper for notes, pen or pencil, periodic table
which I will give to you and a scientific calculator. Under no circumstances should there
be interruptions in class due to unpreparedness. All students are expected to be seated in
their seats at the bell, ready to begin work. Detention and parent conferences will be used
for chronic latecomers and for those consistently unprepared.
Lab
For lab, you will need your laboratory manual, pencil, goggles, and calculator.
Your laboratory manual should be given to me as soon as you receive them and they will
be kept by me. Your goggles are required for each lab and I will also keep them for you
if you would like me to. Goggles must be placed in a sealable plastic bag with your name
and lab section clearly written on the goggles and on the bag. You will work in groups of
2 or 3 and can choose your own lab partners. Groups will be changed by the teacher if
necessary. You may not take your lab manual home with you but you may rip out the lab
pages you are working on out of your book and take just them home if you need to
complete them. ALL LABS MUST BE COMPLETED AND HANDED IN BY THE
START OF THE NEXT LECTURE CLASS. Labs longer than one page must be stapled
together. After lab work will be assigned and the day it is due will be announced. All
material handed in should have your name and section on it. There will be a basket for
your chemistry section on the window sill and your lab and all completed work should be
placed in it when it is due. Labs will be graded after each lab is completed and returned
to you only if they are incomplete or incorrect. It is up to you to see me to make up any
missed lab BEFORE your next lab period. Many of the solutions needed for lab will only
last a week and cannot be made up again for one person. An incomplete lab folder means
you CANNOT take the Regents and will not get Regents credit for this course. Because
of safety factors involved in the chemistry lab, no one is to leave the lab without
permission.
Assignments
Both class work and homework are to be done neatly and legibly. Any
assignment longer than one page must be stapled together. You are responsible to make
up work assigned when you are absent and all work is due the day you return. Please get
the phone number of a classmate so that you are able to get missed work. All
assignments should have a heading that includes: your name, date, chemistry section
(11-1 etc.) and assignment. Many worksheets will be started in class and all should be
completed for homework and brought to the next class. Some worksheets will be graded
and some will be reviewed the next day. Every night all class notes should be reviewed
and studied.
Grading
Your report card mark is based on tests, quizzes, projects, homework, worksheets,
participation, lab reports and lab procedure.
Test grades 50% of the quarter grade
Tests will be given at the end of each unit and will be announced in advance.
Tests will be multiple choice, fill-ins, diagrams, problems and short essays. Calculators
may be used and must be battery or solar operated. Calculators CANNOT be shared
during a test.
Quiz grade 15% of the quarter grade
Quizzes will be given when the unit is very long or the subject matter is
difficult. Quizzes can be unannounced. Every lab day you will have a quiz on the
previous lab.
Lab grade 20% of the quarter grade
Labs will be graded each lab day and should be placed in the assigned basket
on the window sill. Lab procedure as I outline should be followed and because of safety
reasons. THIS WILL BE STRICTLY ENFORCED.
Homework grade 15% of the quarter grade
Homework is assigned and will be posted on the class page. Most homework
will be graded and practice is important in order to understand the material presented in
classes.
If you are absent on a test day, you will take the test the day you return to school.
If you miss an exam or quiz, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to see me for a make-up. If
you do not see me, a zero will be given to you.
General Classroom Procedure
Lateness is unacceptable.
Food, drinks, candy etc. are NEVER to be brought into the lab. No gum chewing.
There is to be no discussion amongst the class when I am talking.
Books
Chemistry and Guided Reading and Study Workbook - Keep at home and I will
inform you in advance when it needs to be brought to class. Reading and homework will
be assigned from these books.
Lab Manual - I will keep these books for you in the classroom.
Extra Help
Extra help will be offered at the beginning of period 7 and occasionally after
school with an appointment. Please inform me if you are attending.
Regents Exam
The Regents exam is required and will be administered in June. The exam
consists of 50 multiple choice questions worth 1 point each and 35 short answer/problem
questions. The exam is worth 85 points and a scaled score will be supplied when the
exam is given.
PLEASE KEEP THIS SO YOU CAN REFER TO IT IN THE FUTURE.
Regents Chemistry
The following is a list of expectations which should be met to ensure a
successful year in the exciting course of chemistry. Students who meet these
expectations tend to do well and those that do not meet these expectations
tend to struggle. YOU must decide to do what is necessary in order to
achieve success.
1. COME PREPARED TO CLASS WITH a writing utensil, paper, scientific
calculator and your Chemistry Reference Table. Also bring your homework
or worksheet if applicable. NO GRAPHING CALCULATORS
ALLOWED IN REGENTS CHEMISTRY.
2. LATENESS IS UNACCEPTABLE and will result in a lunch detention.
Chronic lateness (five times or more per quarter) will result in an after
school detention and parents will be notified.
3. FOOD, DRINKS, CANDY etc. are NEVER to be brought into class. No
gum chewing.
4. BEHAVE APPROPRIATELY in class. There is to be no discussion
amongst the class when I am speaking or another student is speaking. Wait
to be acknowledged before speaking. Respect other student’s personal
property and views. Use appropriate language at all times.
5. WORKSHEETS STARTED in class MUST be completed at home and
brought to the next class.
6. HOMEWORK AND LABORATORY REPORTS should be placed in the
proper basket on the side windowsill before the class starts. Homework not
given in at the start of class will lose credit.
7. ALL MISSED LABS must be made up within a week after they are
assigned.
8. LATE HOMEWORK will not be accepted. Homework detention will be
given after school after two homework warnings are given.
9. ALL CELL PHONES MUST be put away before entering the classroom.
Cell phones that can be seen will be confiscated after one warning.
10. SEEK EXTRA HELP when necessary. All material covered in this class
must be understood before you can move on to the next topic. Please see me
after school or the beginning of seventh period to clear up all questions and
concerns.
11. OBEY ALL SAFETY RULES outlined in your laboratory manual and
discussed by your teacher. Failure to comply with these regulations will
NOT be tolerated.
I expect students to work diligently and keep up with their
assignments. Students can work together on problems and
laboratory work but I expect all assigned questions to be answered
in the student's own words. Copying is unacceptable and you and
the person you copied from will both receive a 0 on the
assignment.
ENJOY THE YEAR!
CHEMISTRY IS FUN!!!!!!!!!
