MINUTES FROM THE SLC MEETING OF 02/24/11
All members are welcomed to the meeting by Mrs. Barillari and Ms. Baker. Ms. Baker
opens the meeting and greets all members. All present members sign and verify
attendance and participation in the session. The minutes are reviewed and accepted at this
time. Agenda items will be addressed at this time.
In preparation for spring testing NJASK 3 and 4, the schools has been offering after
school programs to all effected students. The program runs daily Monday through
Thursday for one hour after the regular instructional time. Both language arts and
mathematics are in session with a strong focus on test taking strategies and thinking
skills. This program will continue until the early part of May. Breakout into small
learning clusters will also be implemented.
Fourteenth Avenue School and the educational community, fully embraces Mayor Cory
Booker’s Newark Peace Educational Summit. The summit will take place May 13-15
2011, inspired by the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King and Mahatma Gandhi. The
activities of the summit will highlight peacemaking as a means for individuals and
communities to resolve problems and conflicts. Fourteenth Avenue School students will
participate in these activities.
The month of February marks the conclusion of Black History Month however; it is the
goal of our school to instill in the hearts and minds of the students reverence for their
culture and history throughout the year.
The cultural assemblies for the month were well received and displayed the creativity and
talents of our students.
Data Walls are updated to reflect the continuing progress of our students and serve as a
means of individualizing instruction.
Subcommittees:
Attendance:
Ms. Tankoos- Wiener explains that the attendance for Fourteenth Avenue School
remains high due to diligent record keeping by teachers and staff. Additionally, Mr.
Harris our attendance officer officially visits homes when required on a regular basis.
Facilities:
Mrs. Thompson informed the group that even though the boilers were not working
properly, they were fixed and the boilers performed sufficiently during the last period of
cold weather.
Budget/ Finance
Ms. Baker has nothing to report about the budget at this time.
Programs:
Mrs. Weeks agreed with the SLC that the programs presented for Black History Month
were a success. The newly suggested changes to activities for the month are reflective of
the creativity necessary to engage students for effective learning.
The Fourteenth Avenue School Annual Cultural Luncheon was well organized and
enjoyable for all participants. We wish to extend our gratitude to Ms. Savoca and her
committee for all the work that shaped this wonderful event.
Curriculum:
Mrs. Crockett reminds all effected teachers and classes that Learnia Testing for grades
therr and four will last for two weeks. In addition, grades one and two will be
participating in NJPASS. This will be the first time the primary grades will take this test.
Parents/Community:
Mrs. Echevarria is planning to involve parents in assisting their children to prepare for
NJASK 3and 4 by offering a workshop in both literacy and mathematics. Both will be
held in March.
On February 9, 2011 parents participated in our extension of “Celebrity Read.” They
were able to read to a selection to the students in their child’s class.
Security:
Mrs. Barillari reminds us that we must secure all doors as we dismiss our students. In
addition, all visitors should sign in at the security desk as well as reporting to the office.
Staff Development:
Mrs. Scibilia praises those teachers who continue to fully use the information that is
presented on PD360. Credits will be given for those completed courses.
Technology:
Mrs. Kadus is working on our school website preparing the technology for live
information.
Discipline:
Mrs. Triano wishes to thank the staff for their continually support of the positive behavior
activities ongoing in our school.
