How do I earn a math grade?
Weight Description
PARTICIPATION/PERFORMANCE
Bellringers. Bellringers are completed during the first 5 minutes of class. Bellringers must
be recorded in your math spiral notebook.
40%
Classwork/Homework. Classwork not completed in class becomes homework.
Classwork is due at the beginning of class the following school day. Acceptable classwork
is in pencil with all work shown. Your classwork grade is proportional to the number of
problems attempted. Each assignment is awarded up to 20 points.

Late classwork/homework is not accepted for full credit. Per the EMS Academic
Intervention Policy, all classwork/homework must be completed; late work will
receive half credit.

Classwork/homework must be recorded in the math spiral notebook. Work not
completed in the math spiral notebook receives a 5 point deduction.
Classroom Activities. Participation in a classroom activity (math problems, Jeopardy,
note taking, MDC, etc.) earns 20 points.
MEASURED ASSESSMENT
60%
Quizzes. Expect a weekly quiz almost every Friday. Quizzes may be open note, open
book, take-home, or closed note/book format. Your quiz grade is based on correctness.
Each quiz is awarded up to 50 points. All students are required to do quiz corrections in an
effort to increase scores.
Tests. You are assessed after the completion of a math unit. The test is a combination of
short answer, extended answer and multiple-choice questions. It is closed note/book. Each
test is awarded 100 points. Although the original test grade is recorded in IC, students
must retake the test until a 74% is reached.
Projects. Math projects with a scoring guide may be assigned.
Do you have calculators in the classroom?
Yes, but not an entire class set. All students should possess a personal calculator. I recommend the
TI-84 Plus Calculator by Texas Instruments because it is the calculator I use for instruction in the
classroom. It’s a great investment for your student’s math education.
What should I do if I miss class?
I encourage you to come to class daily. Students must request missed school work. All missed quizzes
and tests must be taken within five school days of the absence or result in a score of zero.
Am I assigned a math textbook?
Math 8 students are assigned a textbook, Math in Focus. There is a fee for lost, damaged or stolen
textbooks.
What are the classroom rules?
All EMS Code of Conduct is followed in my classroom. I also have classroom procedures:


Math is always first.
Refrain from passing notes.
Refrain from talking during an
assessment.
Show care for all supplies and the
classroom.
Leave the floor spotless.
Can I check my math grade on IC?
IC refers to Infinite Campus, the school wide grade book software program. I suspect most parents and
students know how to log on to IC to check grades. If not, you’ll learn soon enough. Grades are updated
weekly. I encourage students and parents to check math grades frequently.
What will I learn this year?
All students received a copy of “Curriculum at a Glance: Mathematics 8.” The Mathematics 8 Syllabus may be
located on my teacher page accessed through the EMS webpage at http://www.franklin.kyschools.us/ems.aspx.
