Next Newsletter Wednesday November 18, 2015
On November 2, 2010, our student at St. Edward, Erik Scott Herlen, died suddenly. The fifth anniversary of his
passing is Monday, November 2. Erik is greatly missed by our staff and students at St. Edward and we continue to
pray for his soul and for his family. Psalm 23 – I know that your goodness and love will be with me all my life; and
your house will be my home as long as I live
REMEMBRANCE DAY
We will be having a Remembrance Day liturgy on Tuesday, November 10 at 1:00pm. The liturgy will be led by our Grade 6/7 class.
Remembrance Day is a day set aside for all of us to remember the contributions of previous generations. The sacrifices of these
individuals have ensured our freedom and challenge us to continue to work for a more peaceful world. The Canadian Legion has sent
us poppies for the students and in return they have asked if the families would bring a donation towards the Legion and the materials
to make the poppies. Any donation is welcome and can be given to the classroom teachers by Monday, November 16 th.

Our school choir has begun practices for our Christmas season. We will be practicing from 12:15-12:40 on Tuesdays and Thursdays
for the next few months. We are excited to sing at TCU for the Knights of Columbus Carol Festival. This will take place on Monday,
December 7 at 7:00 p.m. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Cratty.
School Newsletter Update
There have been some problems with the newsletter going out electronically however I did send out a bulletin from the Saskatoon
Police this morning that did seem to go through to most email addresses. If you requested the newsletter by email and did not receive
it please send me an email so that I can try to figure out what the problem is. This will be the last time I send out paper copies to those
who requested it by email. If you would like to receive bulletins by email and have not already signed up for it please send me a note
and your email address.
THREE WAY CONFERENCES: The purpose of the Three Way Conference is to allow student,
parent(s)/guardian(s) and teacher(s) time to focus on the student’s learning journey and develop a joint plan for supporting continued
student achievement. It is not intended to focus solely on grades but rather to dialogue about the learning process and to identify goals
that will support improved student learning of curriculum outcomes. Student Portfolios are an important tool for students, parents, and
teachers to support assessment for learning and goal setting. Progress Reports are NOT distributed to Kindergarten students in 1st
Term, but all students from Kindergarten to Grade 8 will be involved in the conferences.
THREE-WAY CONFERENCING:
1. Encourages the student to accept responsibility for his/her academic progress
2. Encourages student, parents, guardians, and the teacher to openly communicate as equal partners
3. Facilitates the development of student’s oral communication skills and self confidence
4. Increases student, parent, and guardian participation in the learning process
St. Edward’s 3 way conferences will be held on Thursday, November 26 from 3:45 – 8 p.m. and on Friday, November 27 from
8:45 – 11:45 a.m. There will be no regular classes for all the students on Friday, November 27th. From Monday, November 2 to
Friday, November 6 we will be taking calls to schedule your family’s 3 way conference time. All conference times will be sent home
with the student’s progress report on November 23. Please call the office at (306) 659-7300 to book a time that works best for your
family.
DRESS FOR THE WEATHER
Students are asked to wear clothing suitable and appropriate for the return of colder, wet and snowy weather. Students are expected to
go outdoors for fresh air and exercise even on cool days, so please ensure students also have mitts and a warm toque. We do ask that
wet and dirty footwear are removed when coming into the school. Please have shoes at school that students can wear indoors.
HALLOWE’EN, ALL SAINTS’ DAY, ALL SOUL’S DAY:
November is seen as a memorial month – that time when we recognize Jesus as Lord of the living and the dead. Halloween on October
31 was formerly called All Hallow’s Eve, meaning “all holy eve”, the night before All Saints Day. “Long ago, the Celts in England
and Ireland celebrated New Year’s Day on November 1, so October 31 was an end-of-the-year celebration. On that day, they
remembered all those who died during the past year, and they believed that on that night the dead came back to be with the living. The
villagers wore masks and costumes to disguise themselves as ghosts and led the real ghosts out of town with a parade.” It became
linked to Christianity when “Christians spread the idea that, thanks to Jesus’ resurrection, we no longer had to fear death or any kind
of evil – so we could even dress up and make fun of death and the things that represent it.” Since the time of Pope Gregory III, the
Catholic Church has celebrated All Saints Day on November 1. This feast honors all the Saints of the Church. All Souls Day is
observed on November 2. It is a day of solemn prayer commemorating all the faithful departed.
Halloween
Halloween Activities will be taking place on Friday, October 30 th in the afternoon. (PK will dress up on Thursday morning). Students
are encouraged to wear orange and black for the day and/or they may wear costumes in the afternoon. Please remember that there is
not be gore, inappropriate characters or weapons of any type – only costumes that are appropriate for a Catholic Elementary School.
We ask that no costumes be put on before 12:20 p.m. In the morning, the Grade 3/4 class will be putting on a haunted house in their
classroom. At 1:00 we will gather in our house groups and have a costume parade in the gym. Our Grade 1/2 and 2/3 classes will be
going to Oliver Lodge and Oliver Place to visit with the seniors for part of the afternoon. We are looking forward to this fun
afternoon!
Halloween Safety Reminders (please discuss these with your children)

HAVE A SAFE AND FUN HALLOWEEN!
Turn Markers Into Energy!
St. Edward School will be working with Crayola through a program called ColorCycle to send used markers to a facility that will
convert them into clean fuel. This will help provide energy for things like powering vehicles and heating homes and will help keep
markers out of our landfills. Each classroom will have a plastic container that will be used to collect any used markers (even nonCrayola brand). Thank you in advance for participating!
HPS
On Tuesday, November 3rd the Health Promoting Schools Student Leadership Team and Club will be helping to lead the school
assembly in a Tug of War for Hope. Tug of War is a sport where every member of the team is equal. To succeed a team has to work
together, encouraging true cooperation and team discipline. The rope allows four teams to pull at the same time. House League Teams
will be divided by gender and age so that the same gender and age groups are pulling against each other. Please join us for the school
assembly on November 3rd and cheer on your son or daughter, as well as all the students in this fun filled energizer to celebrate the
beginning of November, the month of Hope.
CSCC
Welcome to Pam Seib was has joined our CSCC as the secretary. We look forward to meeting you. We still welcome anyone who
would like to join.
A huge thank you to everyone who helped out at the Halloween dance. It was a huge success!!! A lot of time went into setting up,
decorating, prepping items for the concession, & cleaning up. Without help from volunteers these events would not happen.
A lot of emails came back as not delivered, so if you would like to volunteer please email vanghel1@hotmail.com & I will add you to
the list.
Our next event coming up is our gift card fundraiser which is known as Fund-Script, we are in need of someone taking this over for
the next few years. Otherwise we will not be able to run it. We do a lot of fundraisers throughout the year to help with things around
the school. So if you are willing please contact school & we will direct you to the right person.
Our next meeting is November 9th at 6:30 p.m. in the staffroom. Childcare is provided.
