Principal’s Message
Happy New Year! We wish you many blessings in 2016! I would like to welcome everyone back and a very warm
welcome to new families who have joined our school family since the Christmas holiday break. If there is anything that
we can do to make the transition easier for your child(ren), please do not hesitate to contact your child(ren)’s teacher or
myself. We are committed to a wonderful school experience and are happy to help.
“The Word of God, with God from the beginning, does not remain in splendid isolation. It comes down, joins us and lifts us up.
That is the essence of the Christmas message.” Fr. Robert Barron
WEATHER
Students are expected to go outside at recesses and noon hour. When dressed for the weather, fresh air and playtime/socializing with
friends are enjoyable. As the WINTER temperature dips, it is definitely time for warm clothing. We live in a climate where extreme
weather conditions do at times limit outside activities. Please note that when the temperature is -27 C or colder (with or without windchill), it will be an indoor recess.
2016-2017 KINDERGARTEN REGISTRATION & OPEN HOUSE
Now is the time to come in and register your child! If your child will be five-years-old by Jan. 31, 2016, he or she can begin
Kindergarten in September, 2016. A Come and Go Lunch and Open House will be held on Friday, January 15 from 11:00-12:30 in the
Kindergarten Room at St. Edward School. All parents/guardians and children who are eligible for Kindergarten in September of 2016
are encouraged to attend. Parents/Guardians will have an opportunity to meet the Kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Lori Flamand. Please
notify friends and neighbors who may be interested and exploring the opportunity of sending their child(ren) to St. Edward School.
Please call us at (306)659-7300 for more information and/or for how to register.
PRE-KINDERGARTEN APPLICATIONS
We are currently accepting applications for our Pre-Kindergarten Program for the 2016-2017 school year. Pre- Kindergarten will run
Monday to Thursday mornings from 9:00am-11:45am. This is a program provided by Saskatchewan Ministry of Education for the
benefit of early learning for vulnerable children ages 3 and 4 who otherwise may not have the opportunity. Please stop in and pick up
an application form and further explanation on the selection guidelines at the school office or call (306) 659-7300 for more
information. The initial selection for the Pre-Kindergarten classroom will be at the beginning of June, 2016.
CSCC
Our next meeting will be on Monday, January 18 at 6:30 in the staffroom. Childcare will be provided.
Reading Rocks
Reading Rocks is back! Reading Rocks is an event that provides a nutritious breakfast snack and a guest reader who will read a book
or two to the students. There is also a draw for prizes for students who participate. Here are the upcoming dates:
Monday, January 18 - Constable Schwartz
Monday, January 25 - Fireman Delorme
Monday, February 1 - Candace Bloomquist
Monday, February 8 - TBD
The sessions start at 8:20 a.m. and will be in the library. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Lauralee Sutherland at
306-659-7300.
PARKING AND DROPPING OFF STUDENTS
We greatly appreciate that the majority of our parents/guardians safely drop their children off at school. Please keep the following in
mind when dropping off and picking up the students to ensure the utmost safety:
 Drop students off and pick them up on the school side of Avenue P as students dropped off on the other side of the street tend
to try to cross between traffic.

Please park correctly on the right hand side of the road on 31 St. W.

Please do not use the staff parking lot for dropping off or picking up students as staff members come and go throughout the
day. Students also should not be walking through the parking lot as they are not always visible to those in vehicles.

Park outside of the bus zones to avoid costly tickets from the traffic enforcement officers.

Please let the children out on the passenger side to avoid exposing them to traffic on the driver’s side.
Saskatoon City Police have been and will be monitoring our school zones and ticketing people who are speeding, making U turns
and/or parking illegally.
HPS - St. Edward is a Health Promoting School
Happy New Year!
Fall 2015 was a filled with many health promoting activities at St. Edward School. For example,

Each morning a breakfast snack was available for students

15 students were trained in Recess Guardians

2 more teachers were trained in Yoga in Classrooms

Over 15 students were involved in the HPS Leadership Team

BOKS before-school physical activity program was a success
We have many more fun and engaging activities planned for 2016.

A breakfast snack will still be available each morning.

BOKS will start again on February 22nd. BOKS is a FREE before school physical activity program. BOKS prepares children for a day
of learning and is an important step in helping children gain an appreciation of the benefits of exercise and healthy choices that will last
a lifetime.

Teachers will be leading Yoga in Classroom body breaks for students.

The HPS Leadership Team will be leading fitness activities at school assemblies, at recess, and in classrooms.
There are many other ways to make St. Edward School a positive, healthy place for all children to grow spiritually, academically, physically,
socially, and emotionally. We invite everyone to contribute to making our school the healthiest place to learn and work. If you have ideas for
making St. Edward a Health Promoting School, please contact Candace at (306)655-4626.
