We had 2 parent club meetings since my last report, sorry, but here are the highlights from each meeting. As you can see there is a lot more for June, sorry, just so much I wanted to highlight;) We had our Aboriginal Parent club meeting on April 23, 2014. 1) Discussed the 9 Aboriginal In classroom presentations this month and how to continue this for our students (Storytelling – Grade 4/5, Soapstone, Grade 4, Bannock – Grade 6, Bannock – Kindergarten, Button Blankets – Grade 2/3, Medicine Pouches, Grade 1, Bannock – Kindergarten #2 Class, Bannock – Grade 5/6 2) Talked about the Aboriginal Family School of Dinners and how to let all families know about this free dinner and award ceremony. May 1st, 2014 from 4:30 – 7:00 pm 3) Got Dancers of Damelahamid to perform on May 1st at 1 pm for whole school, parents welcome to attend. We had our next Aboriginal Parents Club Meeting on May 28th , 2014 1) Parents talked about how great the Dancers of Damelahamid, teachers wanted parents to know how much it impacted their students. One Kindergarten Aboriginal student who didn’t respond to much all year, drew a picture about the play and the teacher was so impressed, it was the best work he put out all year because the play meant so much to him. 2) Discussed what to do with the certificates of the students that didn’t go to the dinner 3) Discussed the different camps available to our Aboriginal students and what names we should put forth for the camps with only a limited number of students allowed to attend. 4) Discussed the different in-class presentations this month. Sto:lo fishing – Grade 2/3, Soapstone, grade 4/5, Slahal grade 2/3, Sto:lo Salish Weaving, Grade 4/5, Drumming, Grade 1, 5) Aboriginal Department has 3 new laptops as spares for Aboriginal students that need to catch up on their work, donated by Siwal Siwes. 6) Had Metis Jigging for the whole school – discussed how great it was 7) Got a grant from Daytrippers, we took 2 grade 4 and 4/5 classes to UBC Museum of Anthropology for the First Nations Guided Tour. Thanked parent volunteers. 8) Got Inez Jasper in on the 27th for Girls Club, a grant from the Ministry of Justice. She is a famous award winning Sto:lo Pop singer.
