INFORMATION FLOW
Presence of Cystic echinococosis in animals in Italy:
• The epidemiological situation in the last years should
be considered basically constant.
• Dangerous situation in Sardinia and Sicily, even if CE
prevalence and cyst fertility rates seem to be lower
than in the past.
The Veterinary Operational Centre for
Epidemiology,
Programming and Information (COVEPI)
• The sheep-dog cycle, especially the role of shepherd
dog not managed correctly, is the most important way
of diffusion the parasite.

-Presence of Cystic echinococosis in Humans in Italy in 2012
HDRs drawn from the National Ministry of Health
• Italy average prevalence rate (A.P.) was 1,51/100.000inhab.
• The highest A.P was 3.96/100,000 inhabitants registered in the
Islands (2.92 in Sicily and 5.01 in Sardinia)
• In the South was registered an A.P. of 2.21 /100,000 inhab. (4.16
in Basilicata)
• In the Centre 0.82/100.000 inhab (highest A.P. Latium:1,55)
• Prevalence in North was considerably lower, with a registered
A.P. of 0.73/100.000 inhab. (1.13 in Emilia Romagna)
