n u v o l a B was founded in Florence from the collaboration of five architects.
David Benedetti, Jan De Clercq, Angelo Ferrari, Giorgio Furter and Nicola Lariccia bring together in the
professional association n u v o l a B a rch i t et t i a s s o ci a t i (2008) their previous personal experiences in Italy,
France, Holland and Belgium, ensuring a multifaceted approach to each project, based on a continuous and
direct dialogue.
Since the beginning the aim has been to solve specific problems, observing and actively participating to
what was happening out of the regional and national borders.
The activity within the local sphere, begun with public commissions, the commitment in the Planning
Department of the Faculty of Architecture in Florence by some of its members and the sharing and disclosure
of contemporary architectural culture through the foundation of the young Florentine architects’ network
“ottoperotto”, were immediately combined with a deep engagement in national and international
competitions, leading to assignments and close contacts with other countries, in particular Belgium and
Switzerland.
The professional activity focusses on urban planning in all its aspects, from the global masterplan to designing
public spaces and landscape, to actual architecture.
The complexity of design and realization are addressed through a multidisciplinary approach, supported by a
network of professionals in the different fields (mobility, civil and plant engineering, agronomy, participation);
this allows to share the objectives with all the actors involved and, thus, have a higher chance of successful
feasibility for the project.

Urban development increases its own limits pushing the natural
environment far away from the core of the city.
The project Botanic Box, developed for the fifth edition of
Lausanne Jardin, is based on this observation.
Botanic Box brings an answer to the dream of accessing a
fragment of nature anywhere: at home, on a terrace or in a
public space.
The “garden” proposed has been inserted into a container, an
element hermetic to the surroundings, where its perception
becomes amplified.
Botanic Box is a movable, transferable, migrant garden.
A fragment of an ecosystem picked up from a place and
transported to another with similar climatic characteristics.

The design for the new residential buildings in Epalinges has a
double purpose: assure the best integration possible with the
existing urban fabric and the surrounding natural environment.
Distribute the functional program into four buildings in order to
reduce the scale of perception.
The synergy between the existing medical center (EMS) and the
new residences is reflected, on a general planning level, with the
distribution of small buildings around the EMS.
These new volumes, comparable in scale and character with the
existing fabric, seek through their own architectural language a
clear relationship with the future inhabitants.
The orientation and the connection with the context (in terms
of views, exposition and site topography) determine the
pentagonal shape.

The project proposes an approach to the existing urban fabric.
The new building’s profile extruding and bending along the lot,
defines the new front in continuity with the existing one.
On the ground floor, the facade opens in two points and creates
arcades leading to the inner court.
Adding balconies and irregular windows to the elevation,
enriches the volume through different fragmentations.
A green filter along the perimeter of the lot separates it from the
busy street and creates an internal intimacy.
The social and commercial arcades allow good circulation of
people and, together with the garden, create the conditions for
a dynamic public space.

The new residences’ construction area is located at the entrance
of Meyrin, in a key point for the town’s public space. The scale
and limits of the intervention require a design sensitive to the
quality of the surrounding landscape.
The program is split into two volumes, making possible to reduce
the scale of the project and get closer to the language of the
hystorical crossroad of Meyrin.
The fragmentation makes the new system, made of paths
and courtyards which open up between the buildings, more
readable, making the public fabric permeable and similar to
rural villages.
The planimetric and volumetric morphology is articulated in a
way similar to the adjacent historic buildings; the rhythm of the
existing pitched roofs with alternating orientation continues in
the new buildings; the fold in the main facade echoes the old
texture of the fields still readable in the actual urban fabric.

The lake waterfront presents several valuable aspects, such as
the views towards the castle, the path along the lake, the natural
shore.
Opposing these qualities, a massive infrastructural system,
dedicated mainly to transportation, compromises the identity of
the spot. The intervention is based on three main points:
- redesigning the path along the lake.
- reasserting the natural landscape in opposition to the
infrastructural one.
- reorganising the plot as space for relationships - both visual and
functional.
The project “d’abord le bord” sums up these three goals: a
new edge for the lake, constituted by a continuous bike and
pedestrian path, which gets articulated through natural
and public spaces, accommodating new specific functions
(cafeteria, bookshop).

The project begins in 2010 with the intent of renovating a big
apartment at the top floor of a historical palace overlooking
Piazza d’Arringo and only few meters away from the octagonal
Baptistery, one of the most picturesque spots of Ascoli Piceno.
The major challenge was to bring an architectural dignity back,
mostly to the part of the residence dedicated to hospitality.
The role of the mansion emphasizes the fusion with the
surroundings, an outstanding example of single-material city,
entirely built in white travertine.
The inner ambiances overlook directly the square and keep
a chromatic balance with the visual glimpses; the terraces
are designed as lounges plunged into the whiteness of the
stone, becoming convivial spots where continuous perceptive
exchanges happen.
The idea of welcoming guests through the transformation of a
part of the apartment into a B&B leads to maximise the flexibility
of the new inner functions.

The project is the restoration of a large residential unit on the top
floor of a building in the historic center of Pisa.
A strong partnership with the client allowed us to design the new
residence, bringing the philology of the old rooms back, clearing
the space from some more recent low-qualtiy interventions, and
finally working with a particular focus on energy savings.
The main idea works on two parallel levels: one overall flooring
that reconfigures and unifies all the spaces, and the creation of
thematic ceilings, using the existing language of the sloping roof
surfaces.
The living functions are rationally divided into four main
ambiances.
Beyond the entrance, a small filter studio and then the sleeping
area.

The urban renewal project of Oedelem city centre is assigned to
our practice after winning the first prize in a 2009 competition.
Our project is based on a paving design inspired by the concept
of “carpet” as an element around which the space is rearraged:
a game of different “carpets” – realized through a variation of
materials – highlights the existing architectural elements: the
Civic House, the church and a bunker from World War II.
Two areas of great urban quality are thus created, where public
functions will be introduced.
A platform roof is located at the end of the square and integrates
different functions: a stage for public events, a bus shelter and
a bike parking.
Thanks to a collaboration with professional traffic management
consultants, the traffic overload problem transiting through the
city centre is finally solved.

In the next few years, the municipality of Bernex will be
included in a highly developing urban context along the axis
Geneve-France.
Our preliminary study determines the scale of the three different
cities, redefining a global renewal and rearrangement plan for
Rue de Bernex reinforcìng its central role. The institutional and
commercial functions are promoted by implementing soft
mobility connections between the existing and the future towns.
The project refers to the language of local rural environment,
giving new meaning to the boundaries defining land and private
property parcels.
A wide range of flexible solutions for soil treatment, vertical
closing elements, vegetation and urban furniture becomes
the perfect compromise between public and private. The
mobility study rearranges the traffic flow, turning Bernex into a
more people-oriented town with a specific identity, a goal the
northern contemporary city will never achieve.

The municipality of Tolochenaz invited three architectural and
city planning offices to design a new 13 hectare settlement.
Within a study led as a workshop, the professionals found
themselves confronted with a team composed of twenty
experts, in charge of evaluating the different proposals.
The project envisages a new settlement for 2200 inhabitants
and 600 workplaces plus a school, a new metro stop, some
craftsman’s activities and an exhibition hall.
The general goal is to integrate the new high density and mixed
neighborhood with the existing urban fabric, composed of
agricultural plots, an important natural site and a rural village.
Furthermore, the intervention aims to minimize the impact of
the existing infrastructures (highway and railway) on the new
settlement, which will host a commercial core, addressed to the
neighborhood.

This study investigates ideas and solutions to rearrange the city
centre.
Some isolated interventions have been carried out near the
original village but no global approach was followed, resulting
in the creation of a chaotic and hardly legible space.
Between the historical fabric and the new city centre in the
northern area, there develops a ‘middle city’ with no clear
identity, where public spaces are poorly valued and the different
areas are impossible to be re-sewn together.
Within a range of different solutions presented in our study, the
project of a square facing the Léman lake is selected.
The square will have the function to reorganize the urban context,
stitching the varied identities of the town together into the urban
fabric thanks to the use of open views and new landmarks.

The project intends to provide the public space of the town with
an identifiable character, which is now lacking due to the heavy
traffic predominance and the heterogeneous surfaces and
objects.
The materials available in the Valais canton are the perfect tools
to meet the functional requirements of the project:
- alpine granite defines the pavement of the whole pedestrian
area, including all interstitial spaces and semi-public areas of
squares and streets.
- water can be found everywhere in town, making its way down
the natural slope and taking different shapes (bisse, fountains,
water mirrors, etc.)
- wood is used for all kind of support equipments for ordinary and
seasonal activities.
The project’s key concept is SUPERBISSE, a homogeneous space

Our study consists in a neighbourhood plan and the design of
public spaces for the new urbanization of Les Parties, a new west
development area of Yverdon-Les-Bains.
Following the motto “constructed park”, the municipality is
planning to build residences, public gardens, a commercial
area, arts and crafts centres and depots for local and regional
buses.
Of the many areas of expansion identified in the town planning
scheme, this neighbourhood will be the first one to be designed:
its construction will be based on the concept of ‘threshold’,
providing the town with a new model of development.
The term ‘threshold’ refers to the passage from urbanized to rural
territory and it is composed by three elements: the linear park,
the axes cutting the park, and the new neighbourhood that will
be built inside it, from here the name “constructed park”.

The neighbourhood plan area is comprised in a block enclosed
behind three residential streets.
The neighbourhood has only one access road, so that the
residential character of the area is enhanced and heavy traffic
is avoided. Despite the irregular shape of the site, one diagonal
road and two side streets for the exclusive use of residents is
considered sufficient.
The division of the road into two different street types regulates
such aspects as visitors’ parking lots, waste collection and the
pedestrian character of the neighbourhood in general.
The street area is minimized to give predominance to the
pedestrian public space.
The detached houses are located along the margins to benefit
of the great natural value of the site; the semi-detached houses
are located in the centre, where a public garden and a small
pond are within easy reach.

Feasibility plan, final design
The new wine cellar project for Tunia agricultural company
originates from the combination of the client’s requirements
and a careful study of the context.
Two main ideas were developed:
- The borgo – the constructed area around the winery – will be
renewed and expanded by recovering the existing architectural
volumes and restoring the main farmhouse, which will regain a
dominant position within the estate.
- The cellar will be renovated and relocated in the basement
rooms of the farm.
This intervention will take advantage of the natural morphology
of the site, as it will not only favour a gravity-driven winemaking
system, but will also allow an expansion of the uphill area, where
a spectacular terrace overlooking the entire farming company
will be built.

Pantelleria waterfront’s renewal project is conceived as an urban
composition of architectural elements of varying dimensions
that are included and developed in a wider reorganization
concept of the town’s waterfront.
The most significant element that inspired the entire renewal
project is the castle, a structure that must be taken into
consideration both on a horizontal and a vertical level.
The principal requirement is to carry out the project with a single
architectural gesture, despite the different areas of intervention
within the waterfront.
These same areas are meant to be re-sewn into the existing
urban fabric, a project that may be developed through a series
of subsequent interventions.

The project calls for a solution to make the bridge of Ca‘ di Dio
accessible to disabled people.
This is strategically important for the PEBA (Plan for the Elimination
of Architectural Barriers of Venice) because it allows access to a
large area in the centre of Venice and a number of historically
and culturally important places.
The bridge is highly visible (along the lagoon between San
Marco and the Public Gardens) and fairly high up.
Together with the Municipality of Venice and the Superintendent
for the Historical Patrimony, 15 solutions were developed,
ranging from ramps overlapping with alternate walkways to 8%
grade ramps and various suggestions for gently graded steps
and escalators.
Currently in development is a footbridge that will parallel the
existing bridge while integrating with its silhouette.

The program envisages a students’ house for 130 youngsters with
different degrees of physical and mental difficulties.
The project responds primarily to the strong need for flexibility
due to the reduced surface and available budget.
The rationalization and the use of a rigorous modular system,
however, tries not to cancel the young and domestic atmosphere
of the inner spaces.
Three buildings, each developed on three levels, host the
bedrooms for the college’s residents; the relation areas in the
center (living rooms) become the “heart” of the system.
The three wings are connected to a lower body, developed on
a single level, that becomes the main distribution system and
contains all the common functions, such as kitchens, auditorium,
offices and meeting rooms.

72 square metres: a small building, a large sculpture.
The ‘Pensatoio’ is located on a steep slope in an olive grove,
below the medieval centre of Scarlino in Maremma.
The small scale of this vacation house made it possible to work
at a great level of detail, both on the project itself as well as in
its execution.
The entire construction process was accomplished during
two hot summers by 3 determined architect-colleagues who
decided to bear the true ‘weight’ of the bricks.
Due to the lot’s orientation towards the north – which means it
endures long hours of shade in the winter – the daytime spaces
are glazed.
The windows are protected by a brise soleil, which is composed
of a series of rough, irregularly shaped logs that create a
pleasant play of light and shadow.
The wooden skin leads to a monolithic aspect to the rest of the
volume, punctured only to provide access or views.

From 2003 to 2006 nuvolaB collaborated in the design of three
projects for public spaces in the municipality of Scandicci:
1- Borgo ai Fossi. The project’s objective was to create a green
square for the neighbourhood. The existing constraints guided
the arrangement of the various functions: a road; a canopy of
trees; a wall at the back serves as the backdrop for a children’s
play area in the most protected zone.
2- Largo Spontini. This project was born out of a desire to
distinguish two specific areas for its users: a public square for the
neighbourhood and a large play area especially for children.
The square’s design incorporates the spontaneous paths that the
locals had created in the original park.
3- The garden of S. Giusto in Signano was transformed into an area
that satisfies the varied needs of the neighbourhood’s inhabitants:
trees that define the square; spontaneous paths; ‘urban living
rooms’ with a large fountain with jets of water emerging from
the ground.
