The Righteousness of God
Rom 1:17 ~ the righteousness of God is revealed in the gospel from faith to faith, just as it is written, "The
righteous by faith will live."
1. Righteousness from God : imputation; source
2. Righteousness of God : declaration by righteous God;
3. Righteousness of God : attribute of God’s nature
Does our unrighteousness reflect on God?
“From faith to faith”: possibly “by faith for faith”
Everybody needs God’s Righteousness
• All men need it:
1:18 – 1:32: Gentiles need it
Chap 2 – Jews need it equally, despite the law
Chap 3 – imaginary objection – no point in law?
Chap 4 – God’s way always was by faith
Chap 5 – that is why we have security
Imagined objection: Is God Fair?
Rom 2:12~ How can God condemn the ignorant?
Rom 3:23~ ALL have sinned!
What if God said: "Do your best"?
Argument of Rom 3:1-10 esp. 3:8 (Jesuits)
Repeated in 6:1 taking up theme from 5:20
Situation ethics & relative truth
Does election make God unfair? Rom 9:11-13
Let God be true though every one were a liar
Romans 4: Sola fide
One of two great chapters on faith
Extended illustration from life of Abraham
Main message: cannot earn salvation or justification
Key verse: 4:17 ~ language of faith
4:21 Are we "fully convinced" ? Apologetics
Abraham declared righteous by faith alone – sola fide
Five Solae of Scripture
1. Sola scriptura ("by Scripture alone") II Tim 3:16
2. Sola fide ("by faith alone")
3. Sola gratia ("by grace alone")
4. Solo Christo ("through Christ alone")
5. Soli Deo gloria ("glory to God alone")
Rom 5:14 ~ Where did Death come in?
Death reigned from Adam to Moses
What are the implications of this?
Could Adam have lived forever but for sin?
Is there room for death before Adam?
Thus fossils must have been formed after the Fall!
Romans 5 – “Much more”
5:9 ~ how much more shall we be saved …
5:10 ~ how much more, having been reconciled …
5:15 ~ how much more did God’s grace … overflow
5:17 ~ how much more will … [we] reign in life
11:24 ~ how much more readily … grafted in
