I. Ole BENJAMENSEN was a farmer and he was born in 1766 at Bru, Velfjord, Nordland, NOR. He
went to Tåvær, a little island which lies at the Helgeland coast between Vega and Tjøtta, in 1792
from Velfjord. In 1793 the family home was built and is still standing. He married Anna Dorothea
JENSDATTER on 7 Jan 1798 at Tjøtta, Nordland, NOR and she died May 1800. They had two
children. He married Berith ANDERSDATTER on 16 Nov 1800 at Alstahaug, Nordland, NOR and
they had eight children. He appeared on the census of 1801 at Tåvær Island, Nordland, NOR. He
died on 19 Apr 1832 at Tåvær, Nordland, NOR. His estate was probated on 31 Oct 1832 at
Nordland, NOR.
A. Lorentz Andreas OLSEN was born in 1797 at Tåvær, Tjøtta, Nordland, NOR. He appeared on
the census of 1801 at Tåvær, Tjøtta, Nordland, NOR. He and Barrit Christine OLSDATTER had a
daughter.

Nordland, NOR. He later married Gurine Elisabeth MATHIASDATTER on 10 Oct 1839 at Tjøtta,
Nordland, NOR and they had eight children. He married Anna Kierstine KRISTENSDATTER on

Anders Johan Olsen of Tåvær took over the family farm from his father. The Anders Olsen
Household in the 1865 census - 4 cows, 10 sheep, 1 pig, 1.5 barrels of Rye, 2 barrels of mixed
grain, and 6 barrels of potatoes. He died on 12 May 1868 at Tåvær, Nordland, NOR at age 58 of
Yellow Fever. His estate was probated on 28 Jul 1869 at Nordland, NOR.
1. Hans Christian Olaus ANDERSEN was a fisherman. He was born on 28 Aug 1835 at Tåvær,

From "The Story of Norwegian Islanders in the Columbia River" “The 5th of January 1876
Ole Mathius ANDERSEN’S half brother, Hans Andersen, and his wife, Pernille Klausdatter,
rowed from their home on the island of Kilvær to visit friends on the island of Rognan, an hour's
row away. On the way home a storm took them by surprise. They managed to land on small
skerry, but they froze to death, orphaning 3 boys. The oldest boy was fifteen, and able to earn
his own living. The two youngest were only 1 and 11 years old. Their mother, Pernille, had
nursed Ole's brother Nils and sister Elen Anna when they got typhus. Typhus killed his sister
and mother, but Nils and Elen Anna survived. Ole took Pernille's boys into his home. … When
the carpenters laid the floor in Tåvær (in 1871), they had no way of knowing that eleven of the
thirteen children would leave the island. They traveled all the way to the Pacific coast of
America to earn their living. Most of them never returned to their childhood home. Ole and
Petrine were familiar with America. Ole's brother, Benjamin, lived in Tacoma. Originally all
three brothers, Benjamin, Ole, and Nils planned to emigrate. Ole Andersen bought the house
from his stepmother, Anne Christine Christensdatter; when his mother, sister and father died in
the space of a few years.... one of the carpenters was Ole's brother Nils Andersen. ....It was Nils
that put in the attractive wainscot in the parlor in the house. A few years after he laid the new
floor in Tåvær...the first years Nils, his wife, and his small son lived in the house on Tåvær
together with his brother Ole. Their sister Christine, also lived there for two years, until she was
19, and helped her brother run the household. Eventually Petrine came into Ole 's life and there
was a wedding to celebrate in the house on Tåvær. The oldest part of the house was built in
1793. Almost eighty years later it was necessary to put in a new floor....
....Ultimately the household consisted of Ole, Petrine, a maid, a hired hand, and fifteen
children. Thirteen of the children were Ole and Petrine's and two were foster children. ..., the
hired hand, and maid already were crowded in the second floor. Ole, Petrine, and the youngest
children slept in the pantry. The family ate, worked, and talked in the parlor and the kitchen. . .
...There was only one other family on the island. Nils Peder Andersen, fish buyer and
cargo shipowner, and his family lived in the "Lower house"... Nils Peder ran a small store, and
in 1912 they got a post office. Around them, in all directions, were thousands of islands and
skerries where two or three families lived, like on Tåvær. Hundreds of people lived in this island
world on the coast of Helgeland, and they came to Tåvær to buy sugar and flour, some coffee
and tobacco. Once in a while they bought clothing, but for the most part they had to be selfsufficient. They came to Tåvær to work on the "klippfiskbergene", the bare rocks skirting the
sea where thousands of cod were laid to dry. When dry, the rockfish were exported to countries
in southern Europe…
In the barn were five cows and nine sheep. They provided the family with milk, butter,
meat, and wool. The family grew their own grain for bread and planted five barrels of potatoes
each year. In the summer the cows were out in the pasture, and the maid and the girls walked
out to milk them every morning and evening. In the winter the cows ate hay. Since every straw

counted, haying was hard work. They boys cut the hay and the girls raked it and spread it to dry
on the ground.
In the boathouse lies the boat that they use to fish the cod, herring, and pollack, also
haddock and redfish. In the spring they hunt seal. In a good breeze the boat with its viking
lines is a real fast sailer. Ole and his oldest sons rowed to the islands farther north to
participate in the best fishing industry in Norway. When the cod came in from the Barents Sea
to spawn in the shallows of Westfjord, thousands of Norwegian fishermen also came, to earn the
cash necessary for their household economies. Ole's oldest son, Petter, left on the neighbor's
cargo ship. They others joined the crews of other boats. However, thirteen childbirths took their
toll with Petrine's health, and eventually Ole had to stop fishing in Lofoten… The nine brothers
all eventually settled on Puget Island, Washington. In the early 1920's, the island was called
"Little Norway" since the 600 or so families that lived on it were all from Norway.”

a) Anna Gurine OLESDATTER TOVER was a seamstress. She was born on 23 Jan 1876 at
Tåvær, Tjøtta, Nordland, NOR. She married Alfred Berg JOHANSEN on 30 Sep 1897 at
Tjøtta, Nordland, NOR. She appeared on the census of 1900 at Kilvær, Tjøtta, Nordland,
NOR. She immigrated on 14 Aug 1901 by ship then by train to Tacoma, WA, USA where
they were met by Uncle Benjamin Andersen. She appeared on the census of 1910, 1920 and
1930 at Dockton, King Co., WA. She died on 11 Dec 1963 at Dockton, WA at age 87.
Anne Gurine Olesdatter, was sister to the nine Tover brothers who settled on Puget
Island in the early 1900's. A few months after arriving, the family moved to Maury Island,
where they rented a small house and Alfred worked on the shipbuilding dry dock at Dockton
for a few years. They began buying land as soon as possible and eventually built a large
house, one that was designed by Anna. Their first years of farming involved a cow,
vegetables, hay, and chickens. Later, as the size of their farm grew, they began raising fruit,
including cherries, gooseberries, loganberries, and currants. Still later, their farm specialized
in strawberries. Alfred became a U. S. citizen in 1913. When he became naturalized, so did
his family. Their last name was changed from Johnson to Johnsen, and Karen's name became
Carrie. Two sons were born on Vashon Island to Anne and Alfred: Alfred (Freddie) in 1904
and Donald in l916, bringing the number of children to five.

Angeles, Los Angeles Co., CA. She died on 4 Jun 1944 at age 45.

King Co., WA. She appeared on the census of 1920 at Seattle, King Co., WA. She
married Fred William ERICKSON on 20 Apr 1925 and they had two children. She
appeared on the census of 1930 at Aberdeen, Grays Harbor Co., WA. She died on 23 Jan
2000 at WA at age 98.
Esther recalled her growing-up years on the island as happy and interesting, involving
outdoor fun as well as farm chores. Her first school years were in Dockton, but for high
school she had to ride a boat across Quartermaster Harbor to attend class. During two high
school summers, she worked as a maid in the mainland city of Tacoma. After Esther
graduated from Vashon High school, she attended the University of Washington for a year,
riding a launch to Tacoma, then a bus to the university, where she stayed with her sister,
Hannah. She then transferred to Ellensburg Normal School, where after two years, she
received her teaching certificate. She taught elementary school for two years in Dockton,
with four class levels in a room. She got a teaching job at Fruitland, in eastern
Washington. There she acted as principal for three small schools in the District. After three
years of teaching she was awarded a lifetime teaching certificate. During the summer
before going to Fruitland, she met Fred Erickson, and they were married in 1924. She
never followed a teaching career after that. Fred and Esther made their first home in
Tacoma,
(a) Esther Willoma ERICKSON was born on in WA and she married James Carroll
STOUT. Willoma graduated from Washington State College. Her husband was a WSC
graduate and state biologist. Over the years, they and their three daughters lived in
Grand Coulee, Othello, and Spokane WA. Jim died in 1998.
i) Lesli Ann STOUT was born in WA. She married Dennis GRAY and had two
children.

(b) Emma Joan ERICKSON was born in WA one year before the start of the Great
Depression. Those early years in Aberdeen were difficult ones economically. Like
millions of others, the family was without income for over a year. Emma attended Grays
Harbor Business College in Aberdeen, graduated from Washington State College, and
then married William IULO. They moved to Washington D. C. for a year, she then
enrolled at the University of Wisconsin in Madison and received a Master's Degree in
Economics in 1955, and Bill got his PhD. Bill took early retirement in 1983, and they
moved to Arkansas for three years, where Bill was an administrator in the Arkansas
university system. Emma and Bill had two adopted children Kerry and Shannon.
(4) Alfred JOHNSEN was born on 29 May 1904 at WA. He appeared on the census of
1910 at Maury, King Co., WA. He appeared on the census of 1920 at Dockton, King Co.,
WA. He married Vashta Phoebe HILL on 11 Oct 1924 at Los Angeles, Los Angeles, Co.,
CA. and they had three children. He appeared on the census of 1930 at Beverly Hills, Los
Angeles Co., CA. He and Vashta Phoebe HILL were divorced in 1949 and he married
Dorothy about 1960. He died on 5 Dec 1994 at age 90.
(a) Alfred Charles (Fred) JOHNSEN Acheson was born on 24 May 1936 at CA. He died
on 9 Feb 1992 at San Diego, San Diego Co., CA at age 55. Fred never married and had
no children. He attended Colorado College and UCLA. In between, he was a navigator
in the Air Force. He lived out the rest of his life in Los Angeles, then San Diego, CA.
(b) Stephen Hill JOHNSEN Acheson is a twin of Susan and is married to Fritzie.
(c) Susan JOHNSEN Acheson is a twin of Stephen and was married to Clifford Howard
RUNNING. They had 4 children.

age 77.
b) Peter Jørgen (Leffle) OLESON TOVER was a fisherman, carpenter and grocer. He was
born on 7 Aug 1877 at Tåvær, Tjøtta, Nordland, NOR. He appeared on the census of 1900 at
Tåvær, Tjøtta, Nordland, NOR. Petter emigrated to the USA three times, 1901, 1907 and
1914. He married Ida Martine Tobiasdatter/RINGASTAT on 28 Feb 1913 at Tacoma, WA and
they had four children. He appeared on the census of 1920 at Astoria, Clatsop Co, OR. He
died on 1 Jan 1956 at Seattle, King Co, WA at age 78 from Leukemia.

Petter, the oldest brother, had lived in Tacoma and Astoria for almost twenty years, working
as a carpenter and a fisherman... overwhelmed by homesickness, Petter, Ida, and their sons
Obert and Telmer returned to Tåvær, supposedly for good. After one year their longing for
America was just as strong as their longing for home had been. Petter and his family were
now established in a new house on Puget Island and he had opened a store. The family had
lost two children. Their first-born died at birth, and Telmer, the youngest, drowned when he
was 7 years old.

Astoria, Clatsop Co, OR. He appeared on the census of 1920 at Astoria, OR. He
appeared on the census of 1930 at Puget Island, Wahkiakum Co, WA. Obert served in the

Aksel and Anetta had three children born in Norway. When Anetta went into labor with
Olaug, Axel went to the mainland for a doctor. He was stranded there for three days by a
storm. When Axel and the doctor got back to Tåvær Island Olaug had been delivered with the
help of uncle Trygve. Anetta had torn badly during labor and had permanent liver damage
and never regained her health after Olaug's birth. They were told doctors in America might be
able to help and so they immigrated to the U.S. and settled in Astoria OR. Axel continued his
life of commercial fishing, fishing the Columbia River within sight of his house in Astoria. He
had signals worked out with the two girls to summon him for help when their mother needed
him. Anetta died of Yellow Jaundice February 20, 1918. Axel employed a housekeeper
named Dina Gulbransen shortly after Anetta's death. Axel and Dina were married in Astoria in
1919, sometime before they filed for naturalization on June 14, 1921 in Astoria, Clatsop
County, Oregon. They later moved to Puget Island, Washington near Cathlamet where they
lived out their lives.

had to make every penny count. The results of Nils’ fishing trips were nothing or almost
nothing, depending on the fish buyer and his fishing skills. Signe and Nils agreed to wait a
year or two before they left to make money in America. In November 1922 Signe gave birth to
their second son, Ottar. They immigrated in 1924. Nels was unhappy in America, almost on
the other side of the world. Nels wanted to return home to Norway. He never did go home
though. All of the nine brothers were buried by the Columbia River.
