SpongeBob Plankton Gary Squidward Patrick Long Division Each person represents a step in the long division process. 1. Divide 3. Subtract Patrick SpongeBob 4. Bring down 2. Multiply Gary 5. Repeat or remainder Plankton Squidward Let’s Check our vocabulary first Divisor Quotient Dividend Step 1 in Long Division 1. Divide • Divide 2 into the first number in the dividend. • Think how many 2’s will fit into 7. • Write that number directly above the number you divided into. How many 2’s will go into 7? SpongeBob 3 2 72 Step 2 in Long Division 2. Multiply 3 2 72 6 • Multiply the divisor times the first number in the quotient. • Write your answer directly under the 7 or the number you just divided. Plankton 2x3=6 Step 3 in Long Division 3. Subtract • Patrick Draw a line under the 6. • Write a subtraction sign next to the 6. • Subtract 6 from 7. • Write your answer directly below the 6. 3 2 72 6 1 Step 4 in Long Division 4. Repeat decide whether you repeat the 5 or steps of division. Remainder• If your divisor can divide into your new number, 12, or if you have numbers that haven’t been brought down , you repeat the 5 Squidward steps of division. 3 2 72 6 12 Step 1 in Long Division 1. Divide • Divide 2 into your new number, 12. • Place your answer directly above the 2 in your quotient. SpongeBob 36 2 72 6 12 Step 2 in Long Division 2. Multiply Plankton • Multiply your divisor 2, with your new number in the quotient, 6. • Place your answer directly under the 12. 36 2 72 6 12 12 Step 3 in Long Division 3. • Draw a line under Subtract the bottom 12. • Draw a subtraction sign. Patrick • Subtract & place your answer under the line. 36 2 72 6 12 12 0 Step 4 in Long Division 4. Bring Down • Look at your dividend to see if there are any more numbers to bring down. • If not, move to step 5. Gary 36 2 72 6 12 12 0 Step 5 in Long Division 5. Repeat • or Remainder Since there are no more numbers to bring down & 2 will not divide into 0, you do not repeat the steps of division. • The number left over, if other than zero becomes the remainder. Squidward 36 2 72 6 12 12 0 You did it! You’re so Smart! You’re Awesome! SpongeBob Yahoo! Let’s practice with some other problems. Right Now! WHY ARE THEY SO MAD?
