Jersey Shore High School Safety in the Lab Classroom safety Lou Anne Gasperine August 25, 2014 Classroom safety and note books ADHERENCE TO NOTEBOOK ETTIQUETTE: 5 pts. REQUIRED SECTIONS: Title: 2pts. The title tells the reader about the experiment. Objective: 3 pts. What you were going to accomplish with the experiment. The objective is usually found in the beginning of the background information in a lab experiment. The objective may be a statement or posed as a question. Approach: 5 pts. Explain what you did during the experiment. Should include: 1. The safety hazards. 2. Materials used and their amounts. 3. Equipment necessary. 4. The procedures and techniques used. 5. Timing and sequence of process. Use the third person when writing your procedures if need be. Data/Calculations: 20 pts. Record all observations, measurements, and calculations in this section. measurements into a table with headings and units. Organize observations and Conclusions: 15 pts. Using the data collected, make your conclusions about the outcomes of the experiment. Answer the questions addressed in the experiment. You will be assigned specific “post-lab” questions to address in this section. Sign and date your bottom lab page. TOTAL POSSIBLE POINTS = 50 Lab Notebooks Why keep a lab notebook? 1. One needs to document the work that is completed in the lab. You may use the data and/or the analysis to apply the concepts to solve additional problems you may find later. 2. You should be able to think about your lab experience and to observe how a single factor can impact a system or situation. 3. You should have complete procedures and data so the entire experiment may be duplicated by someone else to verify your results. What should your lab notebook look like? 1. The first few pages should be a table of contents to which you may add your lab titles and page number as you complete the labs. Number your pages in the upper margins consecutively. 2. Always sign and date each lab at the bottom of the page. 3. If you make a mistake, do not erase or tear out the page, simply draw a line through the error. On more than one occasion, an error is actually the correct conclusion or answer. 4. One should use pen in the lab notebook. Pencil will smear and is easily erased. 1 5. If you should need to stop a lab and finish it the next day, draw a line and initial below the line. You may resume your lab or analysis on the next day. Notebooks: You will be required to view short clips or read short passages and take notes concerning the item assigned. Notes pages will look like the page below. Use the directions in each section to know what to write in that area. You will be assigned post video questions (PVQ) to answer. These questions will pertain to the video/reading and will be found in the video/reading. 2. REFLECT: Write 1 or more questions 1. TAKE NOTES HERE: Note headings and key words. Use bulleted lists, or outline format. Include that can be answered from your notes. Questions must involve critical thinking, not 1 word answers. diagrams/charts/tables as needed. 2 3.PVQ (Post Video Questions): This is a two part assignment. Read the lab safety contract. A. You are to select FIVE safety rules that are most likely for students to violate. Place the rules you select in the notes page in Section 1. Make a note about why the students would violate the rules in Section 2. B. Explain why students violate the five rules you select. Be prepared to explain to your classmates why you selected your rules and give a valid reason why. Remember to use: (1) paragraph format and include the title and number the rules selected, (2) include the rule that is being violated and (3) why students would violate the rule. Title ___________________________________ 1. 3 4 5 6 Scientific Method Science Safety Rules The Bikini Bottom gang has been learning safety rules during science class. Read the paragraphs below to find the broken safety rules and underline each one. How many can you find? SpongeBob, Patrick, and Gary were thrilled when Mr. Krabbs gave their teacher a chemistry set! Mr. Krabbs warned them to be careful and reminded them to follow the safety rules they had learned in science class. The teacher passed out the materials and provided each person with an experiment book. SpongeBob and Gary flipped through the book and decided to test the properties of a mystery substance. Since the teacher did not tell them to wear the safety goggles, they left them on the table. SpongeBob lit the Bunsen burner and then reached across the flame to get a test tube from Gary. In the process, he knocked over a bottle of the mystery substance and a little bit splashed on Gary. SpongeBob poured some of the substance into a test tube and began to heat it. When it started to bubble he looked into the test tube to see what was happening and pointed it towards Gary so he could see. Gary thought it smelled weird so he took a deep whiff of it. He didn't think it smelled poisonous and tasted a little bit of the substance. They were worried about running out of time, so they left the test tube and materials on the table and moved to a different station to try another experiment. Patrick didn't want to waste any time reading the directions, so he put on some safety goggles and picked a couple different substances. He tested them with vinegar (a weak acid) to see what would happen even though he didn't have permission to experiment on his own. He noticed that one of the substances did not do anything, but the other one fizzed. He also mixed two substances together to see what would happen, but didn't notice anything. He saw SpongeBob and Gary heating something in a test tube and decided to do that test. He ran over to that station and knocked over a couple bottles that SpongeBob had left open. After cleaning up the spills, he read the directions and found the materials he needed. The only test tube he could find had a small crack in it, but he decided to use it anyway. He lit the Bunsen burner and used tongs to hold the test tube over the flame. He forgot to move his notebook away from the flame and almost caught it on fire. Before they could do another experiment, the bell rang and they rushed to put everything away. Since they didn't have much time, Patrick didn't clean out his test tube before putting it in the cabinet. SpongeBob noticed that he had a small cut on his finger, but decided he didn't have time to tell the teacher about it. Since they were late, they skipped washing their hands and hurried to the next class. 7 Your assignment is to WRITE a two paragraph essay listing the safety violations in the preceding story about Sponge Bob.
