Push down on the rear of the feeder and release the locking lever. 5. Grab the feeder and try to move it side to side. It should stay firmly in place if installed correctly. 6. The green LED should be illuminated if installed correctly. Chapter 3 Loading and Unloading Tape Feeders Training Seminar # TAPF-001 Revision A Use the diagram on the following slide to load tape into a tape feeder. 1. Peel back about 2 inches of cover tape. 2. Inset the end of the tape into the feeder at the entrance slot. 3. Feed the tape until it contacts the gear teeth. 4. Press the red button on the feeder to advance the tape to the pick point. 5. When possible, pull the cover tape back and continue advancing the tape until about 5 inches of cover tape is peeled off. 6. Feed the cover tape back into the rollers as indicated in the diagram and attach to the spool. Use the slot on the side of the spool. 7. Continue advancing the tape until the first part appears. 8. Refer to chapter 4 to set the Index programming and pocket position programming as required to properly adjust the feeder. Simultaneously press the front(red) and rear(black) buttons on the tape feeder. 2. Press the rear button slowly three times to enter the pocket position programming mode. 3. Press and release the front button to advance the tape incrementally. Press and hold the front button to advance the tape rapidly. 4. Center the pocket on the etched indicator mark on the tape feeder. 5. Press the rear button once to save the position. 6. Test the setting by blocking the sensor with your finger. Repeat if necessary. Chapter 5 Teaching a Tape Feeder Training Seminar # TAPF-001 Revision A Start BPWin software and allow the handler to initialize. In the Workflow window, locate the “Sources” box. Give the Tape Feeder teach a valid name. NOTE: The teach name must begin with TAPEIN. In this example, TAPEIN_TSOP48 Go to the main window, menu selection AUTOHANDLER/ TEACH. Select the “TAPEIN” name to bring up the Adjust Nozzle Position window. Select the correct Pin 1 position according to the Figures (A or B). Use the arrow buttons to position the downward camera or laser pointer over the device, and press OK. Chapter 6 Clearing Jams Training Seminar # TAPF-001 Revision A 1. Ensure that the carrier tape can exit smoothly. Clear bunched tape if necessary. 2. Check the spent cover tape spool for excessive cover tape. Remove cover tape if necessary. 3. Press the reverse (black) button and see if the tape will back out. Remove excess devices if necessary. 4. Remove the feeder from the base and visually inspect for jammed devices and jammed tape. 5. Cut the tape at the tape entry point or exit point. 6. Press the rear button to back out the remaining tape fragments. 7. Reload the tape feeder. Chapter 7 Tape Feeder Maintenance Training Seminar # TAPF-001 Revision A Tape Feeders require very little maintenance. There are vary few user serviceable parts inside. BPM Recommends: 1. Periodically clean the adhesive residue off of the rollers if pressure cover tape is used. 2. Check the cover tape drive belt for wear and replace as necessary. 3. Remember that the cover tape removable spool has left hand threads. Defective tape feeders will need to be sent to BPM Microsystems, LP for repair. Call technical support for Assistance. Chapter 8 Installing the Tape Feeder Option Training Seminar # TAPF-001 Revision A List of installation parts for Tape Feeder Option FQUAFDR31 – 4” Wide Tape Feeder Power Base Typical Tape Feeder Typical Reel Holder Arm WGRDFINGERCEFDR – Serves as both a finger guard and a bracket to attach the reel holder arm. WWAVSERIAL2TAPF – Tape Feeder Serial Peripheral Card Controls the Tape Feeder through a serial peripheral port. CCHAPLA3XTUBE – SP Card Mounting Plate Used on 3x00 systems as a safe way to mount the SP card to the inside of the machine. WCAB4XTAPFPWR – Power Cable Connects the tape feeder base to the SP card. WCABSHUTLPWRCOM – Communication Cable Connects the SP card to the control port. Assorted Hardware Screws, nuts, washers, tie wraps, and anchors used to install the upgrade hardware. 4x00 Tape Feeder Installation -Hardware- Important: Power the system down and observe ESD precautions when handling electronic circuit boards. 1. Mount the 4” tape Feeder Base to the table top between sites 5 and 9. The exact position is unimportant, as long as the downward camera can see the pick point, and the feeder base is square to the tape top. Drill and tap ¼ - 20 hole(s) if necessary. 2. Mount the 4” Finger guard to the table top behind the feeder base. The guard will hang off the back of the machine. 3. Mount the Tape Feeder SP card to the CHARPLA4XCOMM SP card mounting plate inside the logic rack. Use any open position. 4. Connect the WCAB4XTAPFPWR cable 9 pin connector to J6 of the Serial Peripheral card. 5. Run the cable through the machine and out of the diagonal slot behind site 5. 6. Connect the 4 pin connector to the T/F base. 7. Connect the two pin connector to the empty carrier take-up reel option (if present). 8. Connect one RJ12 connector of the WCABSHUTLPWRCOM cable to J1 on the SP card. 9. Connect the other RJ12 connector to any unused port on the Interface board also located in the Logic card rack. 10. Use the anchors and tie wraps to complete the hardware installation. 4x00 Installation Diagram Tape Feeder installed with Reel holder arm attached to the finger guard. A rear metal panel (not shown) covers the open area around the finger guard. Empty Carrier Tape Take-up Reel system 3x00 Tape Feeder Installation -Hardware- Important: Power the system down and observe ESD precautions when handling electronic circuit boards. 1. Mount the 4” tape Feeder Base to the table top. The exact position is unimportant, as long as the downward camera can see the pick point, and the feeder base is square to the tape top. The feeder is usually mounted in the left bay on top of the tape loader mounting plate. The feeder base can be mounted directly to the table top. 2. Mount the finger guard to the mounting plate behind the feeder base. 3. Screw the SP card to the SP card mounting plate. 4. Bolt the mounting plate and SP card assembly to the inside of the machine. Drill and tape a hole if necessary. 5. Connect the WCAB4XTAPFPWR cable 9 pin connector to J6 of the Serial Peripheral card. 6. Run the other end of the cable up through the slot in the table top closest to the base. 7. Connect the 4 pin connector to the base. 8. Connect the two pin connector to the empty carrier take-up reel option (if present). 9. Connect one RJ12 connector of the WCABSHUTLPWRCOM cable to J1 on the SP card. 10.
