Writing in Math
When writing in math:
• Be clear (elaborate)
• Use pronouns after corresponding noun has
been presented
• Replace colloquial terms with universal
language
• Provide context and examples (details & facts
that apply)
• Use complete sentences and math terms
appropriately
• Stay focused (answer the question posed)
Using “Practice p.80-81”
35) Tristan has 45 apples and 20 pears that he is
putting into gift baskets. Each basket will have
the same number of apples and pears. What is
the greatest number of baskets Tristan can make
with no fruit left over? Explain.
Explanation: The greatest number of baskets
Tristan can make without any fruit left over is
5 because 5 is the largest number that will
divide 45 and 20 evenly. In each basket, there
will be 9 apples and 4 pears.

35) Tristan has 45 apples and 20 pears that he is
putting into gift baskets. Each basket will have
the same number of apples and pears. What is
the greatest number of baskets Tristan can make
with no fruit left over? Explain.
Explanation: The greatest number of baskets
Tristan can make is 5 because the greatest
common factor is 5. 5 is the largest number
that will divide 45 and 20 evenly. Each basket
will have 9 apples and 4 pears.
Using “Practice p.80-81”
36) At Poultry Paradise, turkey burgers are sold
in packages of 8. Whole-grain buns are sold in
packages of 6. What is the least number of
turkey burgers and buns Carly can buy to have
an equal number of each? Explain.
Explanation: For Carly to have an equal
number of burgers and buns, she would have
to buy 24 of each. 24 is the LCM of 6 and 8.
She would buy 3 packs of burgers and 4 packs
of buns in order to have 24 of each.
Using “Practice p.80-81”
36) At Poultry Paradise, turkey burgers are sold
in packages of 8. Whole-grain buns are sold in
packages of 6. What is the least number of
turkey burgers and buns Carly can buy to have
an equal number of each? Explain.
Explanation: Carly has to buy 3 packs of
burgers and 4 packs of buns to have an equal
number of each item. With 3 packs of 8
burgers and 4 packs of 6 buns, she would have
24 of each. 24 is the least number because
there is no smaller number that can be divided

36) At Poultry Paradise, turkey burgers are sold
in packages of 8. Whole-grain buns are sold in
packages of 6. What is the least number of
turkey burgers and buns Carly can buy to have
an equal number of each? Explain.
Explanation: Carly should buy 3 packs of 8
burgers and 4 packs of 6 buns to have 24 of
each. 24 is the least common multiple for 8
and 6. Carly could not buy less than 24 buns
or burgers because there is no smaller number
that 8 and 6 can evenly divide.
Using “Practice p.80-81”
37) What is the least common factor of any pair
of numbers? Explain.
Explanation: 1 is the least common factor of
any pair of numbers because all numbers can
be divided by 1. 1 is the lowest counting
number.
Using “Practice p.80-81”
37) What is the least common factor of any pair
of numbers? Explain.
Explanation: 1 is the least common factor of
any pair of numbers because 1 can divide any
number evenly making it a factor of all
numbers.
Using “Practice p.80-81”
38) Why are you able to find a greatest
common factor but not a greatest common
multiple?
Explanation: You can not find a greatest
common multiple because there are infinite
multiples for each number. You can find a
greatest common factor because there are a
limited number of factors for each number.
For example, the multiples of 2 are 2, 4, 6, 8,
10, 12, etc. (forever ongoing), but the factors
of 2 are limited to 1 and 2.
Using “Practice p.80-81”
38) Why are you able to find a greatest
common factor but not a greatest common
multiple?
Explanation: There is no greatest common multiple
because multiples are products; therefore, you can
always multiply to get another product or multiple.
Every number is limited to a determined number of
factors. Therefore, the greatest common factor could
only exist among those given factors. e.g. The LCM of
8 and 2 is 8 and other common multiples include 16,
24, 32, etc. The factors of 2 are 1 and 2, so when
finding the GCF of 2 and 8, it can only be 1 or 2
because these are the only factors of two.
