Bell Ringer(March 31, 2011): Describe how to use an ethogram. A look at the behavior of Eastern Gray Squirrels and Prevost Squirrels Mrs. Vroman Canter Middle School 8th Grade March 31, 2011 Does an Eastern Gray Squirrel Spend more time moving around than a Prevost Squirrel? Gray Squirrels Scientific name Description Classification Habitat/range Diet Gray Squirrels Life expectancy Enemies Interesting facts about the animal Prevost Squirrel Scientific name Description Classification Habitat/range Diet Prevost Squirrel Life expectancy Enemies Interesting facts about the animal Prediction The Eastern Gray Squirrel will move around more than the Prevost Squirrel. I think this to be true because the Gray Squirrel has to gather food and hide from predators while the Prevost Squirrel does not since it lives in a zoo. Procedures Use a general ethogram to collect behavioral data on the two species of squirrels. Using an ethogram mark the behavior of the animal after every 15 seconds for 7 minutes. Total up the number of behaviors observed at the bottom of the ethogram CONTIUE TELLING HOW TO COLLECT THE DATA Procedures continued… Calculate the precentages Next step Next step Next step Results: Eastern Gray Squirrel Eastern Gray Squirrel Behaviors 1% 5% 21% 13% 17% 21% 6% 16% Digging Locomotion Feeding Grooming Alertness Resting Not Visible Other Results: Eastern Gray Squirrel Explain your results in words The Eastern Gray Squirrel spends most of its time being active by digging and moving.
