REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS
• Registration requirements
– Raw materials for use in commercial feed must be registered with Act
36 of 1947.
– Application to register must be made by person residing in South
Africa or who has a registered office in South Africa
– Made by an authorised person on behalf of applicant
– Raw materials of animal origin must be manufactured in registered
rendering plants
• Required documents
– A covering letter
– Application form for raw materials in duplicate (signed by
Commissioner of Oath)
– Proof of payment
– Certificate of analysis
– Product label
– Form C
– Two samples of 100g or 100 ml each (when required by Registrar)

• Testing required at least once per quarter
– Nutritional analysis
– Drugs suspected or known to be used in the feed or as a therapeutic
treatment of source animals.
– Pesticides used on the source animal, facility, and wastes for pest
control.
– Pathogenic organisms, at least to include Salmonella and E. coli.
– Heavy metals: arsenic, cadmium, copper, lead, mercury and
selenium, at least.
– Parasitic larva or ova.
– Mycotoxins, such as aflatoxins.

• Additional requirements
• Accurate records of the following should be kept for two
years
– Sources of raw materials and date acquired, including information
on drug and pesticide usage
– Production output, including a code or other method to identify the
date of production;
– Sales and distribution, including the name and address of the
purchaser or to whom distributed, date, quantity and product code;
– Sample and assay records of testing specified.

BLOOD MEAL
• The use of mammalian derived protein and by-products is
limited to non-ruminant livestock feeds and pet food.
• Require an exemption from Director: Animal Health
(Animal diseases Act, 1984 (Act 35 of 1984)).
• Procedure for applying for exemption:
– Send a letter to Director: Animal Health
– Facility applying will be audited
– If audit report confirms that facility complies, exemption letter will be
granted
• Applicant can apply to register use of blood meal with
Registrar: Act 36 of 1947
• Exemption letter must be attached to application
• All other registration requirements same as raw materials
of animal origin
